With the Rocna story it was old news before the magazine dare print anything and in the meantime the anchors were still being bought and the magazine was still taking money from advertisements in their glossy pages extolling its virtues.

Sorry that's totally incorrect. Rocna haven't advertised with Yachting Monthly for a long time...if at all...and to suggest that the magazine knew about the problem and took money for advertising is not only misleading but factually incorrect unless you are privy to information that I am not.

There is a long lead in period and features take time to be researched and written, also a lot was pending the outcome of Grant King's trial. It may just be Feb outside, but in magazine world we're already half way through April and have started working on the May issue. :)

I believe you took advertisements from "Pipplers of Poole" who had nice pictures and prices of Rocna's at the top of the advertisement and I did point it out on more than one occasion!!!

To be fair I think that's scraping the barrel!!! A south coast chandler advertising a Rocna in their copy is hardly taking an ad direct from Rocna.

We will be talking col regs in this thread soon.....

Ave a good weekend, I am out of here....!

OK, I really do give up.. look the white flag is waving.

I have been pointing out that IPC needs to get back in bed with its readers and listen to what they say. I have said it on more than one occasion throughout this thread.

There have been suggestions in this thread and others of things we would like to see. I appreciate that Snooks has no control over the content and has pushed for things we would like to see.

The Rocna story must have had a huge lead time as it was a hot potato on the forums for a long time. IPC stayed stum and I understand you may have had legal difficulties printing the story and yes you still took advertisements from companies selling the anchor on your pages.

At the moment I feel like a pubic hair on a toilet seat (well Pi**ed off) that there seems to be a siege mentality of us against them. We don’t want that.. We or I hope that by our suggestions the magazine may improve but it appears to be falling on Vincent Van Goughs missing ear.

The thread is now repeating itself as am I so unless anything new comes up I am going to do my Dragons Den bit and say “It will never work… count me out”

These threads come back from time to time.
And on this subject everything has been said already - just not by everybody.

The response from IPC bods on here is always the same and two-fold.
Richard: bunker mentality. Everything is fine. The mag is the best ever value for money.
Snooks: will partly agree and say it needs more pictures, but also say it's out of his hands.

In the end, nothing changes. And if like Snooks says the editorial staff is already busy with the May issue, nothing will change any time soon.
Shame really. :(

Come on then. There are a few of you with this feeling. Get together and publish the "Ideal Sailing Mag".
You don't need to aim for huge sales, or distribution. Get a subscription base and cut your cloth according to that, Find advertisers who are attracted by a steadier pace of life and lower rates.
Don't take salaries.

Maybe you can get a magazine in the old tradition afloat.

You won't know until you try.

If anyone else was willing then I would try.
Not a published magazine with advertisements but something on-line, good stories from anyone who wanted to contribute and photos. No boat tests, no gear tests, just back to basics stuff that would be of interest to others.

Whist the others are gearing up for the first print of the Smelly Old Boater, have a look at this boy:

Surgeon Rear Admiral John R Muir. A proper toff of the old school doing nothing in particular, to great effect.
