In a way LBJ is indeed preaching to the converted, isn't he ? I don't think we get many complete "risk deniers" on the Forum.
However, his point that, for an offshore breeze the wind strength on the beach is less than the strength further out, is one which I knew by experience but had never given thought to the underlying reasons.
If YBW picks up on one bit of info like that, and can use it in a safety article, I think there's been a benefit. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I read LBJ's disclaimer. Darned good site and blog. Wish I could do one like it.

You're getting really preachy. And up my nose.

Sorry about that. Obviously not intended for folk as experienced as your good self. Just wanted to share an observation from yesterday with other sea users. It's suprising how quickly even obvious things like this can be forgotten..........
Sara?, thanks for the positive response, glad you like the blog!
Launching from Swanage - I would've though you wouldn't get too far drifting with the SW wind ... Bournemouth is quite nice at this time of year ... even if it is a long walk home! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Spent 15 years with RNLI latterly as Coxwain and LBJ's constant preaching is pissing me of big time.!!!!! For those that take an interest in the RNLI I am sure they have the intelligence to search the net for any info they seek!!!!
No Ken...For those with an interest in the Swanage lifeboat they have a great web site full of interest but this guy ramming it down our throats every few days is OTT.......I know what I would be saying to him if he was one of my past crew!!!!!

Paul,
This post was not intended for people with your level of experience, obviously. So please ignore it. However, I don't feel that your response is that helpful. Sea safety messages are important. You know (with your experience) that people make errors in judgement and that sometimes others benefit from timely reminders.
I thought, but I'll re-read the post to double check, that it was decidely un-preachy, more salutary tale...........I didn't judge or condemn those involved.
But beyond all this. I have in no way been rude or negative to either yourself or Twister_Ken.........why then be both rude and negative towards me? Why not just filter out the stuff here that doesn't apply to yourselves? Have I missed something?
John....if it was a one off I get your drift but it appears to me you are on this forum every other week posting a link to your web. Sorry if I am sounding harsh but in my day we just went out, did the job and came home without seeking praise....I wonder what Chris Hawes would think about this??????

John, that is the problem with a forum, you can't target posts to particular groups. No matter how worthy a particular cause is, posts for "spreading the word" are not generally welcome on a regular basis - they irritate and start to fall into the spam category along with free nappies and Nike trainers.
People know what you do and you have a link in your signature, why not leave it at that?
We do go out and do the job. Part of the job today is raising awareness of sea safety issues, our DI and DDI make this clear on a regular basis (and they are very happy with the message of the blog). Surely this is a responsibility for all of us?
Chris Haw (now retired about 7 years) enjoys the blog. He's not very involved down at the station now but has just bought a new yacht (beneteau 40ish foot) so still spends plenty of time on the water.
Believe me, the blog is not about looking for praise but rather seeking to raise awareness.
But then - don't the RNLI, Coastguard and the RYA want the public to learn about sea safety to avoid the need for "you lot" to go out anyway ... LBJ's blog is ok (although sometimes I do find it a little patronising) and by utilising the excellent google ranking on here he will reach a far larger audience - some of whom will need to learn lessons ...
I wondered why they launched for a capsised dinghy - that seemed able to sort it out themselves, but then when I'm on patrol boat duty I keep an eye on any capsise and will offer assistance if I believe there may be a problem - the CG and RNLI didn't have the luxury of being able to do that, so may have been needed hence the launch.
The guys in the inflatable who couldn't make it back against the wind ... well - they would've eventually landed up on shore, but I believe they would've needed to cross a busy waterway first ... I would've thought 99% of the contributors on here and probably over 75% of the readers would know about that lesson ...

Paul I don't see / haven't seen any eveidence for 'seeking praise' - i think this is very harsh and potentially hurtfull.
On the other hand the (relatively) static nature of the audience here, the fact that those here do go looking for information and will revisit good sources (like the Swanage site) are extrememly valis reasons for John not posting continual links under an 'educational banner'.
The single fastest way to annoy people on dedicated forums is to answer questions no one has asked; unfortunately posting links to this is how you should have done it is closely related!
