Well the boat is out of the wated for a few weeks and we have been digging about trying to figure out why the bits that do not work right...well....do not work right. One of many was the reverse lock on the port drive leg, it went a month ago and we assumed it was either fowled up or knocked out of ajustment. On taking it out the water we found that it was the metal rod that the reverse lock catches onto (volvo 290 duo prop leg). the bad seems to slide in through a hole either one of the bracket that the leg goes onto so we thought it should not be tooo expensive. We went to the local volvo dealer on Saturday to find that they did not sell just the rod and we would need to ger a whole new bracket etc at £700 plus VAT!!!!

We are now looking for someone that can machine a rod for us cos I ain't giving that much to volvo for that!!

any thoughts??

Hi, sounds like a whole load of tosh to me.

I had a 280 leg on a single engine. That used to kick up when going astern, when the boat came out the water I had a look. Yes there is a central bar that the reverse latch couples to. But you may find that the retaining latches, ie the latch type levers are worn and need replacing along with all the springs, one central on the reverse lever engagement mechanism and two on the latches, one either side. The bar may also be worn but should be replaceable.

Soleco do a workshop manual for the leg, it’s a good read for about 20 quid, Amazon do it I think.

Try Paul at Coastal Rides (01797367333) for good seconhand Volvo parts, or in this case, find a stainless steel metal worker in yellow pages to make you up the pin. I agree that unless you can see damage to this pin, it si more likely to be the spring catches. I have the Volvo book and will fax you any pages you need if you send me a PM

Try Keypart (01923 221490) who do a reverse paw repair kit for about £60. Don't know whats in it exactly but worth a try.

studgies,

Presumably your eng/drive combo is a 31/290?

If it is just the reverse latch/lock mechanism then you can buy all the individual parts, or indeed a kit containing all of it as a job lot.

Have had a look and am struggling to find what part, or collective parts you have been quoted £700 + Vat for.

Do you have the part numbers for which you have been quoted?

If you do I will be able to help.

As other people have said, Keyparts in watford will do the bits you need. Its more than likely to be the reverse latches. Keyparts do'em for about 22 quid each.
Alsp make sure that the locking nuts that hold the latches on the shaft are not done up too tight. The latches must be able to move on the cross shaft.
Its an easy job to change them with the mech insitu. All you need is a 13 mm spanners and a spring hook, or something to get the springs off the lugs.
While your at it it might be worth checking and resetting the lift release mech as well.

Are we talking about the bar thats in the transom shield. ie the trim setting bar. Or the bar that is part of the reverse latch mech. Either way you could get one turned up for next to no money. Dunno where you are but if your not far I've got a lathe.

it is the bar that the mechanism catches on to, not sure if it is the trim setting bar, I will consultthe manual tonight. I will also spend some time looking for a local workshop that can make one up for me, I am sure there is a non marine place in Southampton that will do it for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the help!

These people are reliable and sell most sizes of stainless, small quantities, mail order. The bar you seem to need would be less than a fiver in 316 stainless

Had a dig around in my "scraps" bin. I've some stainless rod. You still got the two nylon nuts off of the ols one. All I'll hev to do is cut the threads in it. I'll use my one to size them up

Re:How much !!!! but I only need that bit..........

Think that desire to help comes from fact that we have all stood at the Volvo counter with a feeling of utter disbelief followed by one of despair and outrage./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Ah but the original used the nylon nuts, don't know why volvo used nylon!. Just prefer to have someting that doesnt rattle in the shield, The noise will get transmitted through to the rest of the boat.
It doesn't take long to cut the threads in the rod. About five mins each in stainless.

I had exaxtly the same problem on a 280 leg. Volvo at Rochester provided a new one. Can't remember the cost but certainly in lowish double figures. I think someone has misread the parts list! I would try another Volvo agent for confirmation if I were you.

You said it was the bar that the reverse latch locked onto. Well the only one that the reverse latches lock onto is the one thats in the transom shield. It also set the trim of the drive. It being a bar, is the one that matches your description!
