The fixed focus Binos are really great on boats as there's no fiddling with the focus, you just pick them up and everything is in focus, well from about 50' to the horizon.
With the focus type by the time you've found the bouy, lost it, focused, lost it again, re focussed and found it...its swung round so you cant see its name!
£40.00 and they are the best I've ever used.

the 7x50 is the standard naval binocular for two reasons:
The 7x means a magnification of 7. As has already been mentioned, this gives the best compromise between magnification and vision (i.e. the ability to scan across the horizon, and see what there is, without jumping across bits and missing them).
The 50 is field of view, and is essential from two points of view - daylight the widest possible angle of vision to enable the 7x magnification to provide the accurate scan of the horizon. Nightime the field of view needs to be at least 50 to enable as much light into the vision as possible.

Not all 7x50s are created equal. I have a pair of Nikons that are superb. I have seen others that are not as good /forums/images/icons/smile.gif you get what you pay for.

I have used zoom binoculars and if you are experienced , and the zooms start at 7x50, then there is some merit, but if you have the zoom wrong at night, they are worse than useless, and you need to use them in the day at 7x50, and having found something then zoom in (remembering to zoom out again afterwards).

Thanks for the plug Brendon, I've sent him a copy. I'm away from tomorrow, weather permitting. It's looking pretty foul. Never made it to the lifeboat festival last week for the same reasons, didn't fancy 13 hours of sixes and sevens on the nose, hoping for a little more luck to Brest 2004.
