There is NO airport at Levkas. Only Aktion near to those shabby, nasty little so called "marinas" at Preveza where poor people keep their tatty little cruising boats because they are scared to do any open water sailing. Ugh! Is there worse in the locality? WELL YES It's called Vlikho but that is for the seriously badly off!

What a moron

So; what's your point? You're not a member of this "underclass"? You're "better" than this?

8 years of laying up boats in Vliho left me much better off. So much so that I could buy a really nice Ocean going yacht.

There's a misfit here.

Such a silly comment, why would keeping your boat at a so called tatty marina imply your scared to do any open water sailing?

The only reason for paying for a nice swanky marina is if you plan on spending most of your time there instead of sailing - or just to sit looking at your shiny boat from the bar?

I'm sure most of the 1000 boats lifted out at Aktio sailed there from northern europe! Returning to a dry hull in the spring gives you the best start to the next season's cruising.
The only problem is flights but it's do-able.

Levkas and Gouvia essentially cost the same owned by same people. Corfu better for access with daily flights for more of the year Levkas smaller and quieter, both marina and town. Good cruising area from either. If thinking long term possible to buy a lease on a berth in either of them.

Quite. Why would you want to bother with one of those dreary "Preveza" places?

Having wintered in the Preveza yards three times, my impression is that, like myself, the majority of people who leave their boats there launch and go. In the seasons between those three winters we sailed throughout the Ionian for the first, around Corfu, as far south as Messolonghi and the vast majority of islands between. For the second we circumnavigated Peloponnisos. Whereas most of the marina dwellers might go out for a few days and return, or day sail to barbecues and back at night to protect their investment.

Just a statement of fact, not a preference. Fine if you can afford it and want a permanent berth, but waste of money if you are away cruising most of the time.

Several others have summed up the pros and cons of the different locations. Up to the OP (or his mate) to decide what is important for him.

With so many of us so interested in marina and at time so many of us visiting then even if it just for a winter lift out , it would make good sense if a webs site was created so we could all input detail like the prices of mooring , winter lay up , facilitates , and how we found them , good or bad points , I for one would find it very help full . Yes we know pilots book have information on marina but quite often they are out of date well before the books comes out in print . It may make some marina sit up and think again about the way we are treated .

So guys anyone like to take the challenge up ,

Post your comment on the relevant page of www.jimbsail . . .
Will that do?

Many comments people post are then turned into harbour, marina or island descriptions. For a good example, see:
http://jimbsail.info/mediterranean/greece/athens/aegina , provided by Wim van Pelt. Lots more like this . . . please!

Some just can't accept the truth!

Just spotted this, I keep my boat in Aktio, the cheapest of the 3 yards at 'Preveza'. Next time I sail from Paxos to Preveza in F7-F8 with 5m swells ( Thursday 23rd, check the weather if you know how ) I'll invite a few of you Gouvia Marina Gin Palace sops down for the sail. Bet no one can tear themselves away from Navi's long enough to show! :) :)

It was big enough weather for the coastguard to dsc call us using our AIS data to make sure we wanted to be there. We did, it was an exhilarating day!

Glad you made it, not that I doubted you would. We left it another day or two after we last saw you before we ventured back down - but what would you expect from someone who stores their boat in Preveza?
