Beneteau Antares 8.80

Large outboards are KING!

So many people have stopped me at our Marina to ask how I find the big Outboard on such a big boat - my reply GREAT - Quick easy to service - Best boat I have bought out of 13!!!.
The migration from inboard engines to outboard engines for this size boat is set to explode because of all the advantages.

Hi Romans,

I've just put down a deposit on a cheetah 7.6 mtr. catamaran for delivery in June, so I'm going to have to choose twin outboards of some sort. I was looking at the new lean burn Suzuki 60 hp, but the rrp is £8000 each, which would make a twin set up very expensive at £16 k for 120 hp

So I was thinking of using just one engine, like the 90 hp lean burn which would give a cruise of 15 kts @ 4000 revs., and a discount price of £8500. Like your single set up I hope to save 20% fuel with the lean burn, and another 20% by not using twin set up.

I'm very impressed with your fuel consumption figures. I'm guessing 3 gal/ hr at 15kts for the 90 hp. Which is roughly the same as your boat with 300 hp!!

What economy do you get at 8 kts? Revs at that speed ?

You certainly have an impresive setup.
Have you seen the link to Suzuki
http://www.suzuki-marine.co.uk/promos/promo.php?id=400111
http://www.suzuki-marine.co.uk/uploads/Ribcraft 7.8 - DF300A (Lean Burn).pdf

this gives you more technical details re actual fuel consumptions - our novice figures are based on us filling up boat after trips out.
This is our last two trips out details which gives you an idea of our average boating -
Left Warsash to go to Gosport Marina average speed was about 8 - 12 knots with a short blast at 25 knots - five crew on board with full tank out for about 1 hour
Weather conditions were a head wind with slight chop, Tide against us most of the way.

Next trip out was from Portsmouth Harbour, round the two forts, slight chop with full tide race against us entering harbour then round harbour with wind speed about 8 knots at times average speed about 6.6 knots out for about 2 hours - 5 crew up.

During these two trips combind we used on fillup 55.94 litres our rev bands ranged from most of the time about 2500 revs to 3000 revs a short high speed burst at 4500 revs.
As we are out on pleasure trips we do not study our engine reves and speed but adjust the ride and speed to our passengers comfort.
We do have short bursts of speed but most of our trips out are at about 3500 - 4000 revs or at 600 - 1200 revs when trolling.
When we go past the 4500 revs this is the time the engine burns fuel quickly - we have been satisfied with fuel consumption we get bearing in mind we only tend to potter round - we do every now and then take a thrill ride at 30 knots and this is when we realise what a great performance set up we have and experience the AirStep ride stability to its best advantage.

Thanks for all that info., And the links to the Suzuki site......never noticed that performance link on their site, hidden away as it was. The performance of the 300 hp lean burn is simply astonishing, it's truly a new benchmark in fuel consumption. Congratulations on a very sensible purchase. RIP big heavy diesels, bring on modern tech. Lightweight Solutions.

Turns out planing boat designer Uffa Fox was right in 1940's: ' weight is only useful on a steam roller'

'Me thinks'......how can I fit 300 hp on my new cat!!!

Soon to take delivery of my new Beneteau 880.

Is anybody using Lowrance 7HDS chart plotter and if so how do they rate it please?

Also has anybody found a place to store an inflated dingy?

Great Boat Antares 8.80

I have a Lowrance 7HDS chart plotter fitted to my boat and I am well pleased with it.
The NMEA 2000 network linked to this chart plotter has enable us to link in to the plotter The Engine management system which can be displayed using the split screen facility and I also have a NAVICO NAIS-300 Class B Transceiver linked plus the Depth guage.
I often update the Navionics Charts on the internet as there is a free 12 month update service providing the chart is registered.
I have a 2 + 1 tender stowed in the Starboard side rear under floor hatch - plenty of room I can send you pictures of how to stow it

Hi Steve,

That's the really exciting part, choosing all the gadgets. Have you considered using an IPad? You can program all your routes at home, also use it to connect to the Internet to watch tv on demand with MiFi broadband ( fantastic setup). Lots of new connectivity is becoming available, Including remote steering, remote cameras, remote fish finders etc. all on your tablet.

Buying a stand-alone chart plotter is becoming redundant.

I am interested in the 8.80. What engine(s) will your boat have.?
I see that Dickies have a demo model for sale with a Suzuki 250 outboard.
Is 250hp sufficient power or does the boat need a 300hp unit?

Our 880 arrived in Guernsey on Saturday. Was interested in what you said here Romans8 as we tried to make table area in the saloon into a bed and were missing a cushion. Are you saying that there isn't one and that you had to have one made up?

Hi Steve ,

Please post some photo's......

Hi Steve,
Yes we had one made up by a company in Gosport (Hawke House Ltd) from a paper template.
In hind sight we would have fitted an extra wood fillet to make the place where the table fitted slightly wider and the cushion bigger so that it makes a full double berth width.
I will email the pictures of cushion when I visit boat later this week.

Great looking boat - I know you will enjoy this Vessel as much as we are enjoying our Antares 8.80
Even in these cold days we are enjoying going out in it.
Great space inside the cockpit.
Congratulations

Sark is a very special place

I was looking at Sark on a TV series on the Beeb, and it looked fantastic; no cars only horses, laid back style of life, none of the hassle of modern life. Idyllic.

Like going back to before the industrial revolution.

Is it true that the seigneur of Sark is the landlord of all property on the island, and it's only possible to buy a leasehold on property?
