Battery switching.

Anyone out there who can help with a question about positioning a battery switch...?

The existing arrangement is a Batt 1 - Batt 2 - Both - Off switch on the other side of a bulkhead from the two batteries, runs of about two feet or so of cable. Problem is everything is under floorboards in the cockpit.

I want to relocate the switch to behind the instruments, accessible via a lift up door. Will it matter that the cable runs to the batteries will be around 2 metres? I am trying to gain comfort by reminding myself the run to the busbar and solenoid will be correspondingly shorter.

Another ancillary question... could I wire the solar panel output and the charger to the switch terminals instead of the battery posts (both with in-line fuses)?

Thanx

Re: Battery switching.

Extra cable run is only a problem in as much as it should be very well protected against damage that might cause a short-circuit/fire that would not stop when you turn off the switch.

If arranging that protection is difficult, large capacity fuses/breakers can be had to protect the cables/batteries.

Re: Battery switching.

No problem whatsover, as long as cable you use is no smaller than existing. As regards safety, as long as they are kept apart and don't touch each other then you will be using the best insulator..AIR.

No problem with taking the charger(s) out let to the switch contacts as these are only in effect extensions of the battery posts themselves.
