Hi

In my newly started quest for a trailer sailer I looked at my first Leisure 17 on Sat morning.

Seemed solid enough but boy what a mess!! You would think that some one looking to sell anything for £1200 would tidy it up.

Anyway, it has raised some more questions inmy inexperienced mind.

She had had several coats of yacht enamel over the years and obviously no effort to rub down and produce a nice finish.

Question(s) one.

Presumable such paint work could be rubbed down?
Can one use a power sander?
Am I right that you have to be carefull to sand through the Gel coat?

The hull seemed very sound but had had one small repair to a knock just above the water line. It was obviously done with fibre glass but again no effort to rub it down smooth.

Question 2.

What would need to be done to put this right?

Finally. Anti fouling.

Lots of antifouling below the water line. Looked clean but also looked over dry and cracked.

Final Questions

Is Anti fouling slapped on a boat abit like underseal on a car.. it can hide anything?

Can anti fouling be easily stripped off?

If a boat has been out of the water will the anti fouling still work. (I seem to remeber that you should put a boat in the water within a certain time after applying the anti fouling)

Thank you to all, in advance.

Jim

yes you can use a sander but wear a mask, it may be easier (and messier) to use paint stripper designed for fibreglass. and dont go too hard on the gel coat although you are going to paint over it.

if the repair is proud of the hull it's not been done very well and need re doing, if it's not. fair (fill) with an epoxy based filler and re paint.

don't know much about antifouling, sounds like it needs to be re applied though.

yes.

dust caused (as i understand it).. is harmfull so plenty of protection. or pay someone else to do it!!

different types do different things, refer to a distributor.

Re the antifouling: If the boat is to be kept on a trailer there is probably no need for it.
The lack of any tidying up of the boat probably reflects the level of care in other areas, however as long as the price reflects this you may end up getting a good boat that mainly needs cosmetic work.

Good luck.

If I were you I would look at a few other boats. You should be able to find something similal in terms of price and size that needs a lot less doing to it. It looks a lot easier and cheaper than it actually is to ' rub down and repaint '. Keep looking, try and find something with its gel coat unpainted, or at least done well.

Having just gone through the "hunting for first boat" thing ourselves, my observation is to look at as many boats for sail as possible in your price range and the next range up 9we started to look at around £7000, and also looked at boats in the £10-15k range as well). maintenance standard seems to have absolutely zip relationship to price. We saw some boats (particularly a GK24 @£7k) that I thought had been abandoned when I saw them first!

Keep looking. You shoud see some other boats for comparison purposes. Also at the end of the season prices will be more realistic (ie lower)
