I am posting this not to take the rise out of these people but it seems to me that this sort of YouTube excursion into sailing is becoming a regular pot boiler. The bonkers thing is; that they have garnered nearly 30,000 views so far and already have getting on for 10,000 subscribers.

Putting aside doubts that "after saving like mad" they have bought a very nice forty foot ketch, under two years after leaving University. Here is the first episode on the new boat. There were three dreadful trials for the new mariners, including one "Massive Issue":

1) Some gales came through, quite noisy in their marina berth, the boat rocked about.

2) The shocking big one ........The marina said they were full and they would have to find somewhere else next month. Tears of despair.
Later: Marina said they have found them a berth. Tears of joy. Then:

3) More shocks, they had to move the boat to another berth. A challenge but they are learning to take the rough with the smooth. Given help they managed, fortunately the new berth was only ten foot away and they didn't have to start the engine.

It looks like a distinct Blogging phenomenon here, where a personable couple with good video skills hop from one subject to another "following their dream". Another pair with a very similar background did it in the USA making one offshore trip and then selling the boat with a shameless air of "been there done it" to chase the next absolute lifetime ambition.
I must stress that I have nothing against the pair, they seem very pleasant, if they can hack it good luck to them. However at this moment it projects a very odd image of what sailing is about and where the entry expectations might lie.

Anyway, see what you think:

I don't think it represents real sailing life any worse than "The Only Way Is Essex" represents real life in Essex. Or Geordie Shore represents real life in the north east. It is a carefully curated video-friendly story, aimed squarely at a target audience. Probably nothing more than that.

It's like so many things/ There are a few who do it really well, and keep the interest going, Uma, for example, and they seem to be doing really well out of it, so anyone with a GoPro and a belief that they're photogenic thinks they can do the same. How many of us were wannabe rock stars? How many actually made it? It's the same thing. I'll watch the few with the talent to make watchable video and just ignore the rest. Good luck to 'em, I hope their dreams work out.

There are many worse things on YT; if when my time comes and I get sent downstairs for having been a bad boy, lakes of fire would have nothing like the terror of an eternity watching "influencers"

Rock star - never crossed my consciousness. But then I never dreamt of sailing nor living in Oz. Do I need help?

My worries are more about my record of skating on thin ice and going downstairs for upsetting the ever patient Mods here - but I'd welcome many of the influencers and their YT - as they put me to sleep.

I take it you have never heard me sing! Even the spiders leave the bath.
You might still be more melodic than successful stars.

Success does not always seem to demand an ability to sing (in the way most of us think of singing)

Maybe its too late to change career. :(

That's another 16:12 of my life I'm never getting back.
And as I watched this video they'll probably pop up in my YouTube feed for the next few weeks.

I didn't hate it - after all, I was young and enthusiastic once :D .
I'm glad I did my cruising before the days of wall-to-wall YT vlogs took the magic/excitement away.
BTW it can get seriously rolly at Mayflower marina (I was berthed there for a few years,). There's a reason why the berths have snubbers made from tyres! But a lovely area to sail - had a great time there.

Maybe sailing doodles might attract you more -ex airline pilot who after suffering medical issues hit upon another interesting venture.
Do you mean his YouTube venture, or his hosting pornstars on boats in exotic places venture? Both seem to be doing rather better than flying planes!

I didn't hate it - that would imply I cared.
And the video was quite well made.

But when you're posting videos on YouTube, have a story to tell.
We have to move to anther marina... oh, no we don't... we moved the boat to another berth...
Shock, horror... all that 'drama'... and for what?

Not sure if you've picked up one of our hosts magazines recently, but the majority of the authors in there just ramble on about nothing for a page every month to pick up their paycheck. Why should YouTube be any different?

Sad but true.
I browse PBO and YM pretty much every month.
But it doesn't cost me anything, so mustn't grumble.

Why should YouTube be any different?

I guess I'm an optimist at heart. :p

I feel that both attract a following , his Caribbean shots of st Bart’s or wherever are well composed I think though and his viewing numbers seem quite high. Sadly less boatyard detail than when he was on his last vessel but I think his editing seems quite well strung together to entail his target markets.
