Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have put in an offer on a wee boat which are in need of some TLC, but the engines are in very good condition. ( Completely re-built two years ago with 180 hrs on the clock since).

What suprised me somewhat was a quotation of €2,000 (£1,400) for a "Post-Winterisation" service for both engines. Being a cautious bugger when it comes to my own money, I have asked for details of work that is to be undertaken and if consumables, such as filters (air, oil and fuel) and the lubrication and gear oil are included and if it includes the standard fuel injection, turbo, intercooler and cooling system checks.

Basically looking for some thoughts from the forum members on this cost, when compared what you pay for an annual service.

Engines are 2 x 325 hp GM 6/71 TI's (Straight six, two-stroke, big lumps of metal), with good access all round above and under.

Hmmmm

<<"Post-Winterisation">>

well I suppose what was done in pre-winterisation that needs undoing
may need oil flushed but equally may already have new filters gaskets etc and if it is effectvely only an oil change, then it's certainly a rip-off

If it's any help we pay about £1200 for a full annual service on our 2 x 375 hp CAT 3208s just before bringing it ashore (UK South coast) and that's it for winterising etc (it's got new fresh oil stirred around a bit and antifreeze topped up)

Thanks for the info.

Did expect that the cost would be about right for a full service, but as the filters etc. appeared to be new when I viewed the boat and the paperwork I saw stated that they were changed, together with a full fuel and cooling system check at time of winterisation, I thought the quotation rather high.

Now when I have some figures as a comparison, I can calmly sit down and wait for the details of what the proposed service will include.

Yeah, about 100% high according to my mechanics(we run 16 x 16v92s. incl 2 x 92 t's) If all this work was carried out pre-winterisation, and the engines have not been run, then why do they want to do the work again. Check oil & filters, if clean, why spend the money, for no benefit.

have to agree with Hoo - somethings not right. Either it was winterized properly, and that would include an oil and filter change then turned over to pump the fresh oil through the bearings, or it wasn't; in which case ..........
The same applies to drives (and that also includes anodes) - if I remember right you mentioned drives? If not ignore!
