Conundrums and thinking after my latest sinking do, the demise of red diesel and not least, the 310 miles to Plymouth. I am contemplating having the boat transported to Windermere, Funny thing is, this is where she started life, nearly 20 years ago.

I've thought about Wales, kept the last boat there in Pwllheli?

But most places are crap, or full, or at any rate, five or more quid a mile, seems ludicrous for some one retired.

I'm thinking, as I used to boat on Windermere, maybe 25
years ago. And boats being worth about twice there, than anywhere else.

It might be time, to bring the boat closer to home.

Believe it or not. Mooring on Windermere is about 5 grand a year, so not a cheap option.

It's hardly going to be a challenge to me, having cruised, Wales, Bristol channel, Ireland, Scotland. South Coast, CI's and Brittany.

Maybe I'm getting old.

I suppose what I want, is to cruise round Windermere, stopping at little pubs, then on again to another. Not really interested in the posh marina bar. Windermere makes sense, as it's about half an hour from home. The speed limit is a bonus, so can never use more than a few gallon of juice, Cant do 8 knots on the sea, with out wiggly wobbly. But can on Winderemere.

It's a bit of a joke, I know.

Can some one give me some redeeming features. I left the place years ago, and learned about the sea.

So. 310 miles is to far, but fairly quick driving. Wales, less miles. but about the same time. Scotland, bit less miles, but again, not much in it in hours.

There is no finer place to keep a boat, than Plymouth. But I happen to live in Lancashire. Northish at that.

So. Excepting the fact, that I'm nearly never going to be able to moor to a pontoon (jetty) True or fauls??

It's anchor and dinghy. ?? Ok but do locals pop the dinghy. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm nogt playing with the five six quid a gallon. You tell me when I'll die.

What's it got going for it

1) Beautiful scenery
2) Lovely places to visit - by car
3) You are still on the water.
4) Enough pubs to keep you happy
5) It's not 300 miles each way
6) Very relaxing boating

Just accept its going to be different to Plymouth and enjoy it

I agree with MedDreamer. Have been on Windermere for 2 years and really enjoy it.
Your only concern might be getting a berth in Windermere Marina Village. It's pretty full and the general trend seems to be lots of people moving up to bigger boats meaning a shortage of space for 34 foot plus boats. The mooring rates for 2008 have gone up and it will cost £4380 + vat for a 34 foot slot.
Assumin you can get a berth, I say go for it and let me know when you do so I can buy you a pint to welcome you back.

Cheers
Dave

Well............
As has been said great scenery.
Lots of things to occupy you and swmbo other than boating should you wish a change from it,
Drives to different areas.
All manner of activities available, to many to mention.
Some fab restaurants within walking distance of yer berth (assuming Bowness)
Great pubs within walking distance.
Great shops within walking distance.
Loverly walks within walking distance.
The marinas are good and relatively affordable.
The lake is fantastic for a cruise or rafted/anchored for a swim in clear clean water and or water sports (yes there are still water sports whatever you have heard)

Down side is
Not many pubs to visit on the lake itself
Not many public jetties to moor on

In conclusion its a fantastic place we have been here for 7yrs and love it, dont listen to the noncence about the lake beeing dead because of th 10mph bladey blah etc etc.
And as is the case with us you are 1hr away, you know it makes sence.
PS
If you want any other info tel no.s etc for marinas or any other info let me know.

Crikey thats over £5K - more than I pay for my mooring and flights to Mallorca combined ! Perhaps the Med is a viable alternative for those unwilling to pay the new diesel prices

Yes but how often do you go to the med ????
We can and do go to the lake every weekend from march to oct and then every other weekend through winter. Thats a lot of use for our 3k.
Ian

You missed the hyphon! Tush!

£4380 + VAT is £5146 and I think you have to pay for electricity as well. I pay around £3800 all in for my mooring and for next year my flights have worked out at around £1300.

Yes Ian, but you pay for holidays in the sun as well, we get them for free!

Seriously we are out every month, April to October for at least a long weekend and every two months over winter. If we want to go more often we could (holiday entitlement permitting) and still have quite a bit of change from what you spend on overseas holidays I would guess.

It all comes down to how you want to do your boating. The real answer to "How often do we get to the Med" is "as often as we want". I know we spend more nights on board now than we did on Windermere.

I'll talk you into giving it a try yet /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Fair enough. ......I was hoping you were really pished off cos you only got to go to the boat about 3 times a year and therefore "I win" but sounds as though maybe "you win" (again) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PS
You will note I deleted the previous post cos I read it again and totally missed yer point. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

No worries, we both win because we enjoy our boats.

I'm out there again next week. First time for six weeks and i would be lying if I said I hadn't missed it. I think over summer we never had a gap of more than three weeks between visits and i'm having withdrawal symptoms now.

I remember when I had just bought my 2855, it was midwinter but a glorious day, cold and crisp. I was having a rubbish day at work so at lunchtime I just got into the car and headed off for Windermere (2 hour drive). the sun was setting when Iarrived and the jetties were icy (this was at Aquatic on the old pontoons). I put the heating on, made myself a cup of tea, sat and watched the sunset ar peace with the world. then I went home - another two hour drive. one of my best memories of being on my boat ever.

I do miss not being able to do that. So Hlb should do it if he fancies it, wherever or whatever its being on the water on YOUR OWN boat that makes it special

Yep totally agree martyn. On yer boat is best place to be............old jetties eh I remember em well I was on "D" at the back of you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif yep, really good set up now though. Way better than the village IMO cos you get a veiw over the lake as well.

My biggest issue in Aquatics was the noice and fumes of the tractor launching the small mobos. the fumes from the tractor used to set my CO Detector off if the wind was blowing our way!

You're right about the views though, I enjoyed both marinas

Yep but tractor doesnt do much now cos not as many day launches of ski boats. If you ever come up for the day give me a shout, allways drink available onboard, even coffee /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Off to do some work now.

Hi,

Do you have any details (website etc) for your mooring in Alcudia? We have been there a few times and love the place.

The med was (and still is) part of the longer term plan for me and SMWBO.

Cheers

I also think you should give the med a try. I live in deepest Shropshire and have kept a boat on N wales coast. after 5 years got bored and went to south coast which was great but very soon got hacked off with 5 hour pus drives to Polle and have now relocated to the med. We can get to the south of France for less than the petrol bill to poole and in only a couple of hours longer. once there - no contest.
