At the Boat Show

I found :-

radio controlled model helicopters,
branch loppers,
knife sharpening stones,
non-stick cast iron cookware,
anti-rheumatic copper bangles and various similar rubbish "cures",
relaxer chairs,
garden furniture,
silverware,
kitchen accessories, and
cut glass

Forgot for a moment that i was at a Boat Show, I thought it was the Ideal Home exhibition and i had travelled through time

:)

You forgot the expensive cheap sunglasses and the ladders.

Ended up buying 2, await delivery now.

I had a look for a new engine...

Beta, Nanni, vetus, Yanmar and Volvo were there.

Yanmar were part of another stand in the south hall, only had two (bigger) engines, and maybe two staff who were always busy.
Vetus were there, but the position of the impeller discounted them straight away.

Got lots of good advice from Beta and Nanni so we'll see.

Was going to be a pm, but your box is full, as they say.

Hi Graham.

We had a Beta in the Rustler 36 and now have a Nanni in the 44. I have personally received good help and advice from both UK agents. You may want to talk to Nick at Rustler as he will have an informed view having installed probably 20 of each at a guess.

I have done the servicing on both and can't really see any major differences. I would suggest though, that you carefully consider filter locations as they can be a pig to get to. When buying new it's pretty easy to specify remote locations etc. we also turned filters vertical as it seems stupid for them to be horizontal.

I also found the WIFi Bat interesting - up to 5 mile range - 2w - and asked if it was legal but the stall holder basically said as they were importing it, it must be legal....... Bit pricy though even at the Special Boat Show price of £199.
Overall I found it dissapointing, far fewer chandleries and hardly any of the smaller firms exhibiting, very few yachts but fine if you wanted a big mobo but I won't be going again even at the discounted £12 tickets.

Still seems to be 200 mW EIRP on the Ofcom website. So if we say an antenna gain of 10dB, that's a 20 mW Power Amp. Or 100 times less than that device.

As an exhibitor, we found it hard work. The proportion of sailing to the rest was a lot lower than SBS. The stand cost was higher than SBS and we didn't have the benefit of free accommodation as at SBS (friends boat).

However, our stand was very popular and, being an active demonstration, attracted the crowds. Our sales were slightly higher than SBS but the "intention to buy later" seemed more sincere (time will tell).

It is important to remember that Excel is a huge concern and, without the "hangers-on", the stand costs would have to be higher.

The reference to magic glues should be tempered by the Eurobond product which, although very expensive", does indeed seem to be magic. We spotted a Nasa topmast light combining all round white and three sectors;- at last!

We were in close proximity to a charlatan flogging an "inner energy giving" something. His routine is to have you stand on one leg with arms outstretched and then unbalances you by pressure on your arm at the same side as your lifted leg. Unsurprisingly, you topple. Holding the magic disc (at South Wales "boat" show, it was a hologram!) with the same arm pressure, you do not topple. Obviously, the downwards force is tempered by a lateral force, undetectable, in the direction required to give you stability or not. If you see him, steer clear. I lodged a formal complaint as the like discredit the rest of us.

We were disappointed not to be visited by any of our friends here or at least, none that declared.

A side benefit of the outdoors show, was that we had very helpful assistance from some of the climbers who have at last shown us how to execute a single handed (i.e. single person!) ascent rapidly, simply and safely. The solutions offered ranged in price from £3500 down to £10 (the best)!

Is it a bit cheeky to ask what they were?:D

It was my first boat show for many years and as a Yachtie I was disappointed with the low number of sailing boats on show.

I bought a pass for 2 days thinking that it might be too much to take in in one day. It was a mistake as I had seen enough my mid afternoon.

The only stand which I got good advice from was the chap on the Teamac paint. He was very helpful and will be getting an order from me soon.

There were too many non boat related stands and I was certainly put off going on to any of the posh boats by having to put on galoshes!

The highlight for me was when a pretty young girl came up to me and asked if I wanted a massage - using the machine she had in her hand!

Not at all! Climbing a mast single handed using the MastaClimba has never been a problem. Instead of a second person taking up the slack on the bosun's chair halyard, it is attached to the ascent rope (i.e. the one carrying the MastaClimba) with an Ascendeur or similar. The problem has always been descending safely.

As in many things, the answer is simple. A separate line is hoisted together with the ascent line and then used to abseil down. As an established technique, a variety of devices is available. We came away from the Boat Show with an Anka - a variety of a figure-of-eight with horns. Although carrying a speed penalty, the Ascendeur can still be used on the way down as a safety addition.

The most expensive solution offered was a fall arrest winch with a giant air brake for £3500, about the size of a small saloon table!

At the Boat Show I found the luxury yachts from British owned Princess Yachts, I saw the 45ft, 85ft and 105ft yachts and their Fendi interiors and the quality and luxury was breathtaking, shame its not the type of thing I normally sail in.

Something I forgot earlier.

Wilks, who manufacture "teak" decking are also producing grab handles and lip mouldings. As an experiment, we (they and I) warmed some with a hot air gun and found it would bend to around a 80mm radius.

For those of us challenged in the neat corner joint department, it seemed an ideal way of lipping chart and saloon table corners.

No idea what it costs but it could also be machined without losing its texture.
