I found Eliche Radice shaft seals (Here, below the Tides Marine seals) which I had not seen before. As I expect to replace my Volvo seal in a year or so they look very interesting with a greasing point built in and a water supply point. For sailboat use I think it might not be necessary to supply water, but just take a vent tube well above the waterline. Unlike the Volvo seal it won't need burping.

What did you find?

The Radice rubber seal looks intriguing, but it appears that the grease inlet just has a rubber stopper pushed in it. Would you be totally happy with that?

I saw that seal too - I will be replacing mine soon. It looks very good and has a water lub point which I would want.
The rubber bung was very difficult to remove and was designed that way for obvious reasons. I would be quite happy with it.

Conachair -the Guinness was sh*te.

I found the folk on the Kemp Rigging stand were very helpful even though we obviously had no intention of buying anything.

Brunton are going to get an order for a new prop very soon.As above, keen, knowledgeable and very helpful.

We were delighted to learn the Plastimo cookers are made in the UK and have bought one.

We were not impressed by the Guinness stand - much staff training required in how to pour a pint FFS...

Still not worth going back though. We had a shopping list as long as your arm and came home almost empty handed...

I found :-

radio controlled model helicopters,
branch loppers,
knife sharpening stones,
non-stick cast iron cookware,
anti-rheumatic copper bangles and various similar rubbish "cures",
relaxer chairs,
garden furniture,
silverware,
kitchen accessories, and
cut glass

Forgot for a moment that i was at a Boat Show, I thought it was the Ideal Home exhibition and i had travelled through time

Pretty sure Radice make the Volvo seal - they make a lot of the Volvo props. The differences in design as well as enhancing the product are probably so that they can sell them under their own name.

There was VW microbus flogging fags. Lots of vibrating furniture. Several dodgy looking geezers pushing miracle glue. Somebody called Tullet Prebon had a massive stand that seemed to be selling champagne. There was boat that must have fallen off its trailer, half the roof was missing and there were body parts flung about. And an intensely overpriced gybe preventer from Wichard.

I didn't find many of the stands I was looking for and the stands I did find couldn't find many punters. Not impressed this year.

The person from Ofcom I was there with found the WiFi Bat intriguing too.

Best product was Guy Cottens anti-seasickness glasses.

most of the time i got free advice on replacing my wind instruments, but i did get one of those 'clever gadgets only at the boat show' for transferring diesel from cans to tank - its the self priming siphon and its going to save a lot of splashes!

Yes, because it clicks firmly into place, and there is very little pressure inside to push it out. It is also placed between the internal seals, so that there is still a seal between it and the water.

Do hope you're not disappointed - after splashing diesel about in the course of syphoning, I heaved it into the skip. You can't beat a funnel.....so why try?

But Excel is really the outdoor show now, and good it is too - interesting bikes, and loads of stuff for all kinds of activities for young and old. Yachty gear is a smaller part of the floorspace now, but chandleries are there even if the nuts and bolts we love to buy are not.

Loads of clothing (have your own logo added for just £4 !) and ridiculously over priced shoes. A laugh a day....

If you're buying a MOBO it's the place - a whole hall full of the things.

And if you want a new sail, most of the lofts are ready to talk you through it - very useful.

Some good rope deals - but I noticed some esclation in pricing at my (former) favourite exhibitor.

The outside exhibit is limited - mostly MOBO's. And no destroyer this year...

Yes, loads of holiday companies and the like, but then someone has to cough up for the hire of this barn.

Good coffee - a big plus over Earls Court.

Good atmosphere this year (Saturday) not many people disgruntled. The LBS will live on another year, methinks...perhaps time for a change of name.

I also found the WIFi Bat interesting - up to 5 mile range - 2w - and asked if it was legal but the stall holder basically said as they were importing it, it must be legal....... Bit pricy though even at the Special Boat Show price of £199.
Overall I found it dissapointing, far fewer chandleries and hardly any of the smaller firms exhibiting, very few yachts but fine if you wanted a big mobo but I won't be going again even at the discounted £12 tickets.

I had a look for a new engine...

Beta, Nanni, vetus, Yanmar and Volvo were there.

Yanmar were part of another stand in the south hall, only had two (bigger) engines, and maybe two staff who were always busy.
Vetus were there, but the position of the impeller discounted them straight away.

Got lots of good advice from Beta and Nanni so we'll see.

The Syphon pump is so much better than a funnel. On our yacht it can be used on a rough night, in the dark, singlehanded and still not spill a drop. I'd like to see you try that with a funnel :D

While cruising Scotland all our refuelling was done with one of those Super Syphon pumps. Didn't spill a drop at sea once.

Cable tie a piece of fine gauze over the end and it will filter your fuel before it goes into your tank, and keep a bit of oil absorbing cloth in the bag with it to catch any left over diesel. Always have a piece of kitchen towel on hand to wipe down the jerry can end of the pipe and it's a fantastic bit of kit.
