I have finally bought a personal phone, having used a work one up till now. As a sailor on Scottish Coastal waters, what apps should I download and make use of?

These are the ones I use, most fairly frequently, in no particular order: -

  • Met Office
  • Predict Wind
  • Tide Times
  • Navionics Boating
  • Memory Map
  • Raymarine App (for my plotter and instruments)
  • Whale Track (Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Watch)
  • YouTube
  • Star Watch 2 (identifies stars and constellations).
  • Aurora Watch (recently added)

You don't need apps for everything. For weather sites etc it is often better to use the desktop Web version, with a bookmark, as the app and mobile versions often give less info.
And I can survive without YouTube apps etc. If something relevant again can run in Web browser.

Windfinder I like their superforecast, and you get tide predictions as well.

Admiralty Easy Tide. I HATE the format is is presented, BUT it seems to be the only one that gives the actual tide graph accurately, useful here where low tides can have very odd shapes. All the rest just seem to take HW and LW and fill in a random graph in between.

Knots 3D if like me you forget how to tie some knots.

Your local weather station for actual weather, mine being Inverness Airport.

I use Open CPN and their O Charts for navigation.

Marine traffic, an easy way to see what shipping is about.

Agree.

Most of my weather checking is by looking out the window. Pretty low tech, 'eh?

Also, there are apps to check/reset the Gps should it not work properly, I don't remember the exact names but something like "gps check" "gps status" etc, there are a few, sometimes it can be useful.

+1 to Antares charts, which aren't themselves an app but will run on Memory map.
The best £10 you can spend if sailing the west coast.

£20 for a new user to obtain charts for upto 5 x devices.
£9 to upgrade previous bought sets to 2023 versions with a free 2024 upgrade when released.

Antares Charts

20 or 9 pounds, plus cost of Memory Map and UKHO charts, is still great value.
