Given the length of this thread, I'm sure desperation has exhausted all avenues to source these units but thought I'd share just in case -

We had a need to visit Coastal Rides in Dover recently and they were boxing up to move to their new premises, one barge box was labelled up with 'VP ECU's'.

Discussing this thread and the ongoing problems, they were unaware and not had anyone call asking if they had any. Maybe it's worth a call to see what they have. I have no connection with Coastal Rides apart from being a long standing, happy customer.

Update on my high idle issue:
Problem resolved.
Solution: re-calibrate the control lever

Now it idles perfectly. Just wish I had thought of that on Saturday when it was 90° being stuck at the dock. :)

Thanks
I reached out to them via Facebook and received this response today.

From my contact at Volvo...

"Let me check the latest production dates as I know we have produced and delivered the first batch of 50 units before the summer shutdown which is due to finish in the next couple of weeks so production will resume then.
I will double check and revert back shortly"

Interesting, thank you.

I spoke with my VP Mechanic an hour ago and he shows our order still "ALIVE" with Volvo, just not fulfilled. In other words, it hasn't been kicked out of the system and is still active.

Good news: I received this reply from Volvo today!!

Production of the EDC units is due to restart in week 33, week commencing the 15th August.

I need a little more detail on the EDC orders you now require please in order for you to sell the boat. I can see in our system the McDonnell marine order so am looking at prioritizing this unit.
Please provide order details on the others you have on order and which ones do you require?

Kind regards
Graham Pretty

I remember seeing a post that someone was looking for dead EDC's to test with. I have my dead EDC for the 73 P-A engine if that person is still looking for them and wants to PM me.

That's amazing Norsk. Not a single person in the USA inside of or outside of Volvo said these could be repaired. Every mechanic and tech said to simply throw it away as it was essentially a paperweight!
What was the issue with it if you can share that? I know the diagnostics always flashed that the Turbo boost sensor was at the low end of the limit. Other than that, the day it dies, it just died.

Sorry late answer Westernman
Ecu had bad pressure sensor. Changed this one to a hybrid type because original is out of production.
Also changed some ic parts.
Those ic components have a life span of about 20 years or hour opperation equal to 20 years at 20 degrees celsius.
Every chip manufacture company have data sheet that say how long their product will last. I cannot say here what components Changed on every ecu fixed, because that will for most forum readers be very boring,
Epoxy resin in this EDC unit is same in all TAMD and KAD engines. It is very time consuming to remove. When pcb is clear of that glue, you have to understand how all ic , capasitors, prosessor, resistors, voltage regulator work together. I cannot explain that in forum to you all so you understand what I do to repair ecu.
Best Regards Norsk.

You can put “Volvo ECU repairs” and a link in your signature as I understand it. It will be a benefit to you and many here if you can fix them.
It’s a company in Chesterfield near me and sadly no they won’t touch the ecu in question because it’s too complicated and out of date .

Okay - not to bring in a big debate on this topic just facts at this moment in time i.e yes or no will suffice.

Is there now plenty of stock at Volvo of these ecu units ?
Are these units at volvo re engineered to modern day tech ?

@Norsk you say you can repair dead units - in simple terms does this include modern components and the programming ?

Jon and Michie.
Sorry for late answer.
Those edc1 units repaired get new components that will last +20 years.
They are same as originals. Some are from year 2000, and other from 2023.
Many components are very common todays electronic. What is old stuff is prosessor inside this edc1 unit. Its like a very old 486 computer from year 1998.
Anyway this prosessor do the Job easy to the very simple Job to belonging engines made by Volvo Penta . KAD engines. TAMD engines. 😉

@Norsk many thanks for your reply.
Do they include the programming?

I hope all goes well for you - I'm all for the David vs goliath scenarios especially where volvo are concerned.
