Volvo Penta engines.

If it is an early '80s VP2002 with shaft drive then the gearbox splines might be of more concern than the engine itself. However, with a little bit of Google it seems that most Furias were not fitted with VP from new, so it might have been re-engined at some time.

I followed a similar route (Google) and could not define the original engines that were fitted. The build age I found suggested that if the engine was 'from' 2002 - and this suggested a newer installation hence the MD2020 (and the original engine was simply academic).

And got jumped on by a point scorer for my efforts. :( - which I found intensely annoying and totally unnecessary.

I confess I do start threads with minimalistic information as usually I want some 'off the wall' answers and ideas and I don't necessarily want focussed replies.

Well thanks for your input…point scorers ,very negative and silly

Looking at a boat with one but somewhere I read they are not good and spares are expensive, any comments, many thanks.
I needed a new alternator of my MD2002 18hp.
Diesel mechanic thought that they were about €800 but that he might get one much cheaper.
I searched on the net and bought one from Altrincham for £60 - installed price in France < €100.
Out of interest I went to Volvo Penta concessionnaire and asked the price.
€1400....!!!

Volvo never built there own alternators or starters for that matter so as long as the fitting is correct a variety of makes and origins will be ok
traditionally marine alternators had some form of damp proofing

VP used to supplied exchange electrics at very discounted prices but did not push to get old units back no idea if they still do

I assumed, from the wording, that the engine was 'from' 2002 - though I actually thought production of that specific design of yacht ceased earlier. I confess I did not clarify as I thought the information and wording to be accurate and if production of the yacht did cease earlier - that she was re-engined in 2002. I, like Tranona, am aware there was a Volvo engine 'MD ? 2002' and this was replaced by the MD2020, from the 90s ? until the new and current 'D1' series was introduced (the current equivalent model would be the D1-20).

For the future if you were buying - it would be important to define which (I appreciate that you will not be progressing - for other reasons). I appreciate if you are not familiar with Volvo engines (and your thread suggests you would welcome any background) you would have had no idea of possible confusion.

What ever the background I did not think it merited any supercilious comments. Its not about scoring points but about offering help.

Jonathan.
Still digging ??
