virus and \"worm\" fixed! back on line and need advi

After much searching, I am about to buy a Sealine 218, which I think is a very good deal. However, (there's always a but.....) The engine was replaced last season and has done about 20 hours since, the engine is AQ205A 4-3 V6, compression test revealed one cylinder at 90psi instead of approx 130, and the electric choke doesn't close on the carburettor. Do I need to be worried? It could be head gasket? Or is there anything else I should be thinking.

As usual, your advice would be most welcome.

In the assumption that an engineer or otherwise qualified person has picked up on these faults you mentioned, what would his/her expert opinion be regarding cost of repair??

Haven't had an engineer to look myself yet, info given by vendor, due to new baby and other commitments, he doesn't have the time to get the work done, engine sounds very good, however, he said on opening it up on the way in on last trip, it didn't pick up as quickly as it should, so investigated and found that the choke problem (could always have been like that) and also the low psi on one cylinder.

Has dropped the price for this reason.

Hi Lynda, I personally think that compression loss on that 1 cylinder is acceptable it could be down to a tight tappet on the valves(if there adjustable they need checking) normally a service item. You havent said if engine was original rebuilt or new unit but if as you only 20 hrs the engine really hasnt run enough to settle in!.If no irregular temp, misfire, loss of coolant are apparent i would'nt worry to much.As for the Auto Choke i dont think they are used, basically you pump throttle lever to flood carb with fuel to start from cold.

Low comp is never good news. However, a quick test you can do yourself. Test the cylinder with a compression tester and note the reading. Then tip a teaspoon of oil in the plug hole and retest. If the reading goes up, its more than likley ring probs. If it stays the same it could be valve probs. If its not spiting back thru the carbs when running then your looking at exhaust valves. Not a massive prob and could be just a sticking valve or not been adjusted properly.
On the other hand it could be the head gasket. But if its not losing water and the cooling system is not getting pressurised then I'd rule that out. Also check to see if the oil level has risen in the sump and the usual "mayo" around the oil filler for signs of water.
The old V6 is an easy lump to work on and is pretty bullet proof. Do have it checked by a mechanic to see what he/they say. Can't really be decisive with the symptoms that you describe, really need to look at it.
Hope that helps a bit. You have my number if you wanna ask anything that your not sure of.......good to see you back.

Which Cylinder was it and was it a cold compression test. If it was one of the last cylinders and cold test then sometimes this can show a low reading. It would be very strange if all the others were at 130 for one to be at 90.

This happened on my old 205 when I got popping back via the carb. I found after removing the head that one of the exhaust valves had been hammered down into the seat and was therefore a y instead of a t section. Therefore the valve was not closing properly with the resulting loss in compression. Dave

Hi Brendan

As per title, had a bit of a "worm" problem, so not been on line for a while, but been busy looking for a new boat!

Really like the sealine, just a bit worried about the compression thing, but feel a bit better about it after xr3i and Barry's reply's.

Have you got any thoughts on the 218?

Lynda

No personal experience, but the MBY boat reports have some general surveyors notes which may be worth a peek
