our vire 12 runs quite happily for about an hour or so and then just dies instantly as though the off button has been pressed. without doing anything it can be restarted almost immediately, and then runs on for another period. any ideas?

I'm not familiar with the Vire but it sounds similar to a problem we had with a Yanmar engine that had a low oil cut-off. When running with marginal oil, enough would eventually be out of the sump to allow the switch to shut the engine off. The excess drained back almost immediately so you could re-start.

Just a thought if you have this feature fitted.

thanks colin, the vire is a two stroke petrol engine which is very simple and uncomplicated, none of this messy sump business, but thanks anyway.

If you engine is fitted with a flexible rubber exhaust - and most Vires were - the inner lining may have collapsed. This is usually due to overheating following a coolant blockage, and the rubber liner is intermittently blocking off the exhaust and stopping the engine. Pull the pipe off the exhaust manifold stub, and if the inside is bubbled folded over, or loose then theres your problem.

A new piece of 'diesel hose' will see you on your way - until next time you overheat it! This was a very common cause of stoppage in these otherwise reliable engines - and not a few were scrapped as 'unreliable' because of it!
