Which engine, which instrument panel and how old? My Vetus one became very unreliable after 10 years not helped by the overly complex electrical system so I simplified and built a whole new panel.

It could be a defective key switch, a wiring fault or an alternator fault

Recently someone had a similar problem with a VP installation but I forget what was found to be causing the problem .......... maybe they will respond.

Oh yes, doooh!
In that case, my new Vetus engine loom was wrongly wired and power to the ecu was on when the battery switch was turned to on. As it was well out of warranty although never used I rewired the loom myself.
