Sam D has got herself in some nice conditions. VMG in the high teens along with Damien and Pedote.
The boats towards the East look like they will keep the wind and close the gap.
It will be interesting to see if Le Cam's far East gambit pays off.

Alex Thomson went East and he was really lucky it paid huge dividends but it was a gamble. I don’t think it will pay off this time.

It's really complicated. From my amateur read, the further back you are in the pack, the better East looks, as there looks to be a great big hole opening up that the leaders might just get across, but the back of the pack definitely won't, but there might just be a bridge of sorts close to Africa.

Interesting that most of the non-foilers seem to be following the same routing as the faster foiling leading boats in the lead. Or maybe they are just following the herd?
Trust LeCam to do his own thing.
Colman is going v close to La Palma. Surely he will jibe round and not go down the East coast like he did with Madeira.
Fascinating stuff.

Yes, the chasing pack goes back a couple of hundred miles and they are surely not going to make it.
Memories of my disastrous club racing days, trying to follow a faster (and rapidly disappearing) boat round the course!

10 a.m. update has Sam D with a VMG 10 kn faster than the leaders over the last 4 hours.
Another few hours of that and she will be right up there.

Charlie D seems to be hedging his bets. Steering midway between the Easterly and Westerly boats. Which paid off for him in the New York - Vendée.

A technical question. On the tracker, is the wind speed reported for each vessel fed by telemetry from said boats wind instruments or is it an estimate based on the weather model? There is a difference.
Perhaps this should be in a new thread since not specific to the Brits

EDIT - "A" notable exception rather than "The" notable exception as I've noticed that Manuel Cousin has a VMG of 12.

Well, he’s got form. And a boat favoured (v the foilers) in the light. And, last VG he packed a large spi and profited by it, in the Southern Ocean, when the wind dropped….. Wonder if he’s brought one, this year?

What is puzzling me is that many in the chasing pack, to the North of the leaders, are still following the leaders' track to the South. Why are they not heading more to the W, where the leaders are trying to get to? Esp as it would keep them in the NNW wind longer.
i.e. The leaders are close hauled WNW and many of the boats to the North are honing in on their transoms.
D'Orange and Cousin are two such boats.
Surely, it would make sense to cut the corner and head the leaders off at the pass.
