Plenty afoot, in Sam G’s group, this morning:
Paul Meilhat looks to have put himself into steady breezes. Now able to make solid northerly progress toward, the headed and J2-less, Thomas Ruyant.(And, they say, bad luck comes in threes!)
Juju is breaking west.
Sam G, Boris, Jérémie Beyou & Nico Lunven fighting it out in fickle breezes.
Is Paul Meilhat about to pull off a breakaway?
Is there a way through the 2022 boats, for Sam G?

Sam G's bid for 'best dolphins at dawn' video:

View attachment 187545

In sharp focus on Helen Fretter's YW Logbook. (Video should open @1.30)
Really interesting. He sounds a little shell shocked to me which is understandable given it's his first time around. I get the feeling he just wants to make it home.
Note that Justine has gone west when I thought it was a good option for Sam G. The forecasts are all unreliable in that area so I can't work out if it's a good thing or not but I think it shows a different mentality to Sam.

Winner of the Vendee Globe 2000, Michel Desjoyeaux (aka Mich Des, aka The Professor) addresses the foiler v daggerboard question: 'Should there be two seperate classes? ' As interesting, as his answer, is his reasoning. (Sous titres Anglais available)

Will she, won’t she? Justine making 20+ knots, to Sam G & Boris’s 6; BUT with an extra 100nm (or so) to cover, if she is to leapfrog them (in the same generation of boat as Sam G’s)

Paul Meilhat on top of Thomas Ruyant (without J2 or 1st reef, for the rest of the race).

Jean Le Cam smack on the rhumb line, in the Le Maire Strait. Only 200nm astern of Damien Seguin and Romain Attanasio’s foilers. With light wind transitions ahead. Plus potential upwind work. Conditions which may suit his daggerboard boat (and its wily skipper’s routing skills).

Sam D may need to be looking over her shoulder soon…..

On today's 'Live,' Sam G talking about taking the "inshore option" and "some scalps to be had," amongst the boats ahead. Maybe with their damage lists in mind: Thomas Ruyant - no J2, no 1st reef, Nico Lunven - no masthead instruments, Jeremie Beyou - damage to the mainsheet track, Justine (behind) - no J0.

John Le Cam has closed yesterday's 200nm delta, to Romain & Damien, down to 60nm. By going east, to their west, around the Falklands.

Charlie & Yoann set to shoot the equator. In a building breeze (with the potential to negate Charlie's early lift off advantage). If Yoann's routing (to the finish) is right (Sous titres Anglais available):

Sam G 50nm off the number four slot, on the 10.00 sched.

Jean Le Cam's delta, to Romain & Damien, down to 25nm. With a freer wind angle.

And Yoann closing up to Charlie, at the front. Only 78nm between them now

After 21,000nm and 56 days of racing

Did I miss something... why is the highly experienced Arnaud Boissiere in a foiling boat way down at the back of the pack?

Le Roi Jean attributes putting 6 (likely 8, in a short while) foilers astern to his choice of offering, to Neptune (when he crossed the equator, southbound). A 2016 Saint-Julien. Wonder what Arnaud's offering was?

Hope Sam G did Neptune proud.........

Neptune does not adore Le Piat D’Or!

Word from Sam G, on today's 'Live.' Freshly groomed and quietly determined, but "not getting too carried away by it all" (Currently 5th, in his first Vendee Globe, with a 'previous generation' boat. Which is plenty to not get too carried away about!). Should open @22.07

Antoine Mermod. IMOCA Class President, is tomorrow's guest. Hopefully some insights into his thinking on fully foiling IMOCA's (removal of the rudder T-foil ban), and how/whether to accomodate foilers and daggerboarders within one IMOCA Class.....

Antoine Mermod is with Mich Des (^^post #386) on future race format. With regard to the foiler v archimedean question. (Should open 29.46)

Talks masts and mast hooks / halyard locks earlier on (14.22). Following Pip's dismasting (plus others during qualification) and multiple dropped J0's, this race. Gives the righting moment, for a 2012 daggerboard / small foil boat as 20-30t per metre, and that for the current generation of foilers as 30-40t per metre. Hence the 2025 One Design Lorima mast upgrade. Halyard lock design is open, to the teams. But high up the list, for a post race review, by the class.

No mention of any consideration of a move to fully foiling IMOCAs.
