Hi - I haven't been following the thread so sorry if this has been covered before..

What happened with the two Vulnerable boats? Last time I looked TR was way ahead of our lad. Navigational choices or something else?

Cheers

Interesting that there have been phases where Charlie has dominated but then gone slow for a time and Yoann has caught up or overtaken him. Then Charlie has suddenly found speed again. I guess we'll find out afterwards what issues Charlie has really been dealing with during those interludes. Anyway, I hope Charlie wins, not saying he was robbed exactly last time, I guess the committee had to be generous with allowances for the rescue.

I think it's mainly just foil / sail wardrobe optimisation. Dalin is better set up for reaching and Yoann is faster deep downwind.

Yoann gave a good explanation of the strengths (and weaknesses) of his boat v's Charlie's in this video (should open @ 4.30). Short version: Charlie's boat lifts off earlier. And is therefore 'better' in light to medium conditions. Particularly upwind. Yoann’s boat is ‘better’ in ‘big’ conditions. The ‘why’ is in the video.

I know Charlie has form, on keeping quiet about issues (like turning up at the 2020 finish with his foil held on with string!). BUT he did share his sail repair in the south, this time. When Yoann caught up to him and Seb. After they made, what may be, the deciding move of the race. Going south through the Pacific low. Where Yoann took the longer route north, over the top of it. In an (arguably) more heavy weather oriented boat. In which he needed to bank miles. Ready for Charlie to come back in the lighter / upwind conditions of the Atlantic..... (Written from the comfort of an armchair, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight!)

I know - delighted for him!

Just wondering what happened - he must have hauled in around 800nm!

Thomas has shredded his J2 and is unable to use the first reef on his main. After a big knock down, in a 50kt squall, coming up the Atlantic..... (Think he was actually nursing the main, and attempting repairs, a good while before that)

Then there was the 'inshore' or easterly tactical option choice, off Cabo Frio......Jury still out on how that will shake out, for Sam G's fleet. (Another) Exciting week ahead in the Vendee Globe!

EDIT: If you go on the Vendee Globe tracker you can wind the time line back, at will. To watch how the race up the Atlantic has unfolded on 'fast forward,' as you wind it back to real time.

Tough times for Pip:

1. Out of the 2024 Vendee Globe, with a broken mast
2. Boat, sans rig and sails, marooned in Melbourne
3. Medallia title sponsorship ends, after 5 years (following appointment of a new CEO? my speculation)

If anyone can turn these setbacks into a springboard, for success in the 2028 Vendee Globe, it's Pip. Fair Winds, in filling the sponsorship gap!

EDIT: Can only help, to share the link on our ‘socials.’

This type of sponsorship is invariably the personal whim of a CEO who likes sailing and prone to disappear. I've always wondered about the finances of vendee globe campaigns, will post a question soon. Probably flaming knows some answers.

I'm still none the wiser as to who Medallia is and what they do. It's just a name on the hull and I can't be a**ed to google it.
So, a bit of fail for me.

Yes, Leslie was the driving force behind the Medallia sponsorship, and when he left it was going to come to an end. I've seen some negative things about Medallia ending the sponsorship posted elsewhere, and I would absolutely refute that. You have to be grateful that they came in and funded Pip to do what she did, not be angry that the journey has come to an end.

What makes me chuckle slightly about the photo you've chosen to use here is that my logo is the only one actually legible in the shot.... So thanks!

Can confirm that we've signed on the dotted line (or actually, just sent Pip a whatsapp) for 4 more years of sponsorship at our tiny level. If any other forumites run companies and want to see their logo on some small part of an awesome project, I'm happy to put people in touch.

Sponsorship happens for a bunch of different reasons. In Medallia's case they are a B2B company so marketing to the general public was not one of them. It's therefore no great surprise that none of their messaging relating to their sponsorship of Pip has reached you.

Boris lost his J2 hook so he's sailing J3 and waiting for a lull to effect a repair. Biotherm is catching quite fast so first to equator is open but I'm still calling it for Sam G. At the front I think Charlie may well have it now and if anyone deserves a win it's him. Justine still minimising manoeuvres, I think she's in the same generation boat as Sam G so another impressive race. And she's Swiss so lots of interest at work which makes it fun for me.
