Yes, understand that Kiwi but were imports of second hand boats from Europe ever much of a component in the UK market? I don’t think that alone can account for the current shortage.

For nearly new boats, particularly the more specialist brands and Scandinavian boats, yes buying second hand boats in Europe and bringing back to the UK was very common. We bought ours in La Rochelle. There were none for sale in the UK.
Clearly not so common for lower priced boats, where the costs of going out to view etc would be uneconomic, and UK built boats.
 
It’s a shame that the UK imposes a 25% tariff on US imports - on top of the 20% VAT charge. We could do with a few more Catalinas on the market. They make a refreshing change from the standard JenBenBav offerings.

Interesting about Catalina ..... the Jag 22 ..... 27 ...... Alacrity 19 ..... they are interconnected in design .... depending on which story you read - Jag 22 became Catalina 22 .. while others claim Cat 22 became Jag 22 etc.

Must admit I do like Hinkleys .....

That is not the main reason why there are so few US imports - even when there was no duty US manufacturers were not interested in the UK (or even the far bigger EU market). high value of $ and the cost of certifying were two reasons, plus the volume smaller boat manufacturers in the US have largely disappeared and replaced by imports from Europe.

AFAIK the Frank Butler designed Catalina 22 was the first (and longest lasting) version. Russell Marine started building in the UK under the name Alacrity 670. Later the UK versions changed name to Jaguar 22.

The accepted version is that Frank Butler designed the Cat ... series of boats from 9 to xx ft .... 22 and up were adopted by UK builders ... Russell Marine

I had an Alacrity 19 which was the original leading to the later Mk 2 and then metric designate 670 larger version - the 22 .... similar evolution as the Snapdragon from ft to metric .... again a Russell Marine. According to Bristows - the Alacrity was designed by Peter Stephenson in 1960 ... pre-dating Catalina.

This is part of the reason that you come across some versions where the design went WESTWARD ... to USA and was base of Catalina evolution.

Another snippet .... Thames Marine were the 'Builders' of Snapdragons / Mirage etc. But that was an arm of Thames Structural Plastics who were molders of hull / decks for many other 'builders' - Russell Marine believed to have been one.
Both RM and TSP predate Catalina.

My father bought new an Alacrity 670 from Russell Marine. It was the same as the Catalina.
 
I don’t want to start a Brexit debate but I would like to understand the post Brexit financial situation. We’ve always paid VAT on boats, so what’s changed?

For a new boat, nothing. It's as you say - we paid VAT before, we pay VAT now. This applies to a UK built boat or an EU built boat. There is no tariff if the new boat is substantially made in the EU when importing it to the UK, which the BenJenBavs all are. It only affects used boats which are subject to VAT on entering the UK and UKCA compliance.

They must be UKCA certified which may take US manufacturers a while to catch up with considering that they have effectively been excluded from the UK & EU markets by the 25% tariff for a while. VAT is also payable on the transport costs which always seems unfair to me, but has been a requirement since Noah restocked the UK with badgers when he dropped them off in Cleethorpes in 3800 BC.

Imported some hard to find pre loved Volvo Penta outdrive parts from Florida a while back.
The total included
The £ to $ costs.
The bits .
The packing
The shipping.
The import duty.
VAT on all of the above.
....................and it still worked out cheaper than buying the stuff in the UK.

One of the biggest problems with buying parts etc, from USA .... most US dealers don't want and do not ship internationally ... its brought about creation of outfits in USA that take international orders then buy and ship out .... this can lead to problems of warranty ... as you now have a third party involved.

Just mentioning as it was an issue I observed a while back.
