I am interested in an Iridium sat phone, as their system would cover me down to the Falklands and can even work into the high latitudes. So you know that wherever you happen to be on planet earth, you are likely to be able to get a connection, which is pretty amazing. The cheapest I have found the phone is £750 new, then you have to buy air time, 75 minutes £40, 200 minutes £253 etc. You would think the more minutes you buy the cheaper per minute it would cost, but apparently not. I am not ready to buy at this precise time, so I have been seeing what is available. A two year old Iridium Sailor, used for one ARC has just sold on ebay for £400. This is a huge bargain as the Sailor comes with a full installation kit for a boat including an external aerial mounted on the pushpit. I think the cost new is about £2500. So it may be worth your while watching for used models on ebay.
