Yes, ball valves normally have nickel plated brass balls running in Teflon. Millions in use without any problems. The brass is not in contact with water and does not suffer from dezincification.

I think you have fallen for the misinformation

The balls fail all the time, as regularly documented here and elsewhere. The only misinformation I’m seeing is from you. Plenty of evidence all over the place about the deficiencies of metal fittings, you seem to be blind to it or choose to ignore it for your own agenda. From your posts here you just appear bitter that you can’t afford the TruDesign ones that everyone else are now choosing as standard.

I didn’t feel a need to contribute to this thread any further - my original question was answered and I received some helpful advice but then I saw this on the Hallberg Rassy owners group site just now. Thought it might be of interest…View attachment 155160
Somewhere in my files I have an email from one of the directors of HR justifying their decision not to change to DZR. Their view was that inspecting seacocks for imminent failure was the normal job of the conscientious skipper.

The normal failure mode of the balls is that the plating pits and spalls off, increasing the friction considerably. The stem, weakened by dezincification, then snaps, often with the valve closed or partially so. I have experienced this myself and seen quite a few.

All the components of DZR valves are made in the same material although the ball is still plated. It is now possible to buy bronze valves with plastic balls but the cost is beyond eye-watering.

I have no agenda. The misinformation is plain to see as in the article in PBO. I am just pointing it out. You will also notice if you read what I write, instead of making up your own version, that I acknowledge all the potential deficiencies of the 60/40 plain brass valves and fittings (even though they are still used extensively by boat builders). My comments about the suitability for replacements by people such as you and I is solely related to DZR components - which as Vyv has just said do not have the same deficiencies. The bodies and fittings are highly corrosion resistant as are the internals. Actual valve failure is very rare. As I have pointed out many times it is threaded fittings that cause the problems which are eliminated if DZR or bronze fittings are used.

My stance has always been that composite valves do not offer anything over DZR to justify the price premium. I could buy enough composite valves for my boat 10 times over without noticing - and if I thought there was benefit I would not hesitate. But then I do my research and base my decision on facts and evidence rather than constructing spurious "might happens" or transferring experiences from one type of product to another different product.
