My GMC diesel with morse control baffles the experts , I have had two marine engineers look at the set up for diagnosis and treatment, no Diagnosis so problem remains. crossing the Solent at 24knts hand off throttle we slowed to almost a stop.

Crack on throttle a little to get up to speed and leave her running at 20 knts or so and after a while the engine would surge and speed up .

Along side at Cowes started her up and she shot forwards even though lever in neutral position.

Back trying to hold station to get into the marina, no neutral forward or reverse was me choice. wife contacted marina told them of problem , Great Staff helped me through the gate and along side my berth SCARY though.
Morse control system any Ideas?? Running out of local engineers.

Sounds more like a gearbox problem to me than throttle. Check gearbox oil level first, if Ok, then consider having it checked out by experts as this is a symptom of hydraulic problems in the box, possibly internal seals failing, or a partially blocked oilway causing loss of pressure and thus loss of drive.
Have you changed the gearbox oil and filter recently, if not, it might be worth trying this next as it may get rid of any dirt in there, and hang on to the old oil, because if this doesn't solve the problem you could send a sample off to The Oil Lab for analysis, and they'll tell you if there are any nasty's in there, which will help your engineer to diagnose the problem and point him in the right direction to solve the problem.
Good Luck and I hope this may be helpful.

I presume we are talking 6.5lv8 diesels through Volvo duoprop stern drives.

Surely drives only have oil in to stop whole lot seizing up, they are not hydraulic like an inboard box. They therefore have no oil filters or oil presure as such.

Therefore apart from possible difficulty in engaging and disengaging gear, lubrication is not likely to be the problem.

The fact that you also have problems with throttle as well, and the only point where the gear selector and the throttle cables meet is at the control end is this not where the problems lie........... ie with the morse controls.

I don,t think the problem is at the expensive end ( Volvo drive). I reckon its something silly like the morse control coming out of adjustment, worn, broken etc.

Incidentally who's "marinisation" is it MarineDiesel or Smurai.?

I've just been through the same issue - GM 6.2V8 to Alpha One leg. I was certain it was a gearbox / clutch issue and was looking at about £1k to fix. Turned out to be worn gear selector cable which then sheared leaving me stuck in ahead. Still had to be lifted out for repair, but wallet almost still intact!
