This is a typical situation where it isn't really a problem until it is.

As they say in finance "past performance is no guarantee of future returns". It just takes one officious idiot to ruin your whole day and get you tangled up in knots with a lot of time wasted and possible expense/legal action. It's usually easier just to follow the rules and make sure the flag flown matches the boats registration and fly what you want from the port cross-tree.

We fly the red ensign as the boat is registered in the U.K. and the cross-trees look like this ....

Are we talking about Scottish independence now? .... You do know politics will get you sent to the naughty step.
No, my wife wanted to fly the Saltire on our boat but a friend told her it is the official signal for a vessel "stopped and making no headway" so we have a rather cheap and tacky Lion Rampant instead.
She is Scots born and bred, I'm adopted

I've been thinking about having a courtesy Scottish Red Duster, no confusion about making way or not.

I usually fly the pan-celtic.

Is that a real thing or you planning on a duster with the George and Patrick crosses taken out? I grew up in Belfast where "flegs" are a touchy subject so I think I'd rather fly a towel

You can buy a red ensign with a saltire in the corner where the Union flag is usually seen. They are not uncommon around Scottish marinas. They have no legal significance.

As a west coast Scot with a family on both sides of 'touchy flegs' issue, I am a devout atheist.

As others have said it is a real thing.

Suggest your wife should look to her inner Celt and ignore her “friend” and fly a Saltire when she wants.
Hundreds if not thousands of visiting yachts fly the Saltire on the starboard spreader as a courtesy flag when in Scotland, and many Scots fly the Saltire across the world on the port side as a house flag.
Anybody questioning this and suggesting it is a signal flag can be educated in Celtic languages, which will have plenty of suitable technical terms :)

Other Celtic courtesy flags are also used in the relevant waters - including Brittany and Cornwall etc.

My wife objected to me flying a Dutch courtesy flag from the starboard mast while we were traveling through the Dutch canals, she wanted me to put up a saltire instead.

With the amount of weed in the canals the "saltire" might be an appropriate flag to fly with having to stop and clear the water intakes so often.

Of course the Dutch flag should have been on the starboard side, Saltire on the port. All parties happy.

The union Jack is the UK Union flag flown as a jack from the jackstaff on the bows. The Red Ensign indicates that you are a UK registered vessel (although it is generally accepted in UK coastal and inland waters that probably only a small proportion of boats are Part 1 or III Registered. ) However I do recall that on the high seas if security forces wish to board you they have to contact the Flag State for approval (takes time especially in the middle of the night). On the other hand if the target vessel is not wearing an ensign then the boarding party if free to leap aboard.
