a politician.
Don't you feel sorry for our American cousins? Imagine us going through all that fuss and expense, only to be headed for four years by a President Blair, or a President Howard?
Our present system may not be perfect, but it has worked for us for many hundreds of years, and I would die fighting to prevent us going down the other road.
I thank God for our Queen. Not liked by some, but capable of respect by most!

Sorry, can't see the difference currently, mainly due to the large majority Labour have enjoyed. Also can't see any political part played by HM having made any difference to President B. Liars decisions.

Our present system has worked for us for many hundreds of years eh! Har har!!!! That's why we now have a choice between Bambi and the Vampire is it!!!! But it's alright folks cos the Queen will sort it out......
She will stop the USA dictating our foreign policy and doing what we are told won't she..... (That's of course after she sorts out her own dysfunctional family).

Mmmmmmmm...

We may have the unequal voting system for first past post - but it a) stops the crap that you see in for example Italy with Proportional Repr., b) the farce of US elections where the actual joe bloggs in the street doesn't really decide - its conventions and elctoral colleges and 'brothers' .....

We may not be perfect - but many countries still continue the systems that we gave 'em.

Blair will try all to put us into US style of politics - but in reality we are not the same mentality to have such comedy conventions and mega $ campaigns .....

I am a royalist .... and not ashamed to say so .....

Re: Mmmmmmmm...

If the liberals ever get their way and introduce Proportional Representation, it will be a disaster. You only have to look at the debarcle in Italy and Israel. It eventually means that the extreme parties hold the casting vote and thus manage to get some extreme policies into law that normally would not even get past the first vote.

Royalist - me too and proud of it.

Every time the media have a go at the civil list, They seem to forget that the monarchy agreed to swap their crown income from their possessions for an allowance from the civil list. At the moment they would be way better off to cancel this agreement.

Exactly. All this democracy rubbish will never work. Bring back Genghis Khan. Things were a lot more civilised when he was ruling Europe.

Re: Mmmmmmmm...

Yeah, Italy what a basket case, just look at their gdp -it's, er, similar to ours and their crap Industrial base - Fiat/Alfa, CNH, Finnmeccanica - bet they wish they had Rover. And no other sensible countries have PR, only Germany, the Netherlands etc. And we have no changes in government between elections of course - the cabinet stays exactly the same for the full 5 years.

The big question is, if you're not in a swing constituency/electoral college (and the US system is the same as ours in this respect) what's the point of voting if your choice is different from the majority's ? And if your vote doesn't count, why accept the authority of the elected MP/President? How can a system where millions of votes are effectively ignored be democratic?

I think you've missed the point I was trying to make.

Our system may not be even near perfect, and the Queen, God bless her, may be virtually powerless, but she is our constitutional monarch, head and shoulders above mere politicians, and someone to be respected for doing an impossible task to the best of her ability (given the cards she was dealt and the guy she married) for many more years than any of us will work!

Swap that for an undignified scramble determined by how much you can spend to get elected? And loose the pomp and ceremony of state occasions that no-one else does as well as us, that always gives me a lump in my throat? No, thanks!

15% alien origins!

Well that's nothing! We all know that 150% of all Scots ARE aliens! That must be why Mars bars, galaxy chocolate and Milky ways are so popular up there. ;-))
