Spent last nite on a mates boat ashore in Hamble Point Marina, was amazed by the number of boats in the river, looks to me like one huge boat parking lot. I would hate to be based there, summer weekends must be a nightmare, boats must be nose to tail trying to get in and out. Or maybe most of them never move.

For those of you Solent based how do you cope? I go boating to get away from crowds of people, is that possible there?

Where are you Col, there's a good chance I'll be there again soon as my mate has only just bort his boat and will be working on her for a good few weeks yet b4 bringing her back to Exmouth.

John, you're right. I moored on the Hamble for years and it is wall to wall grp but everything does keep moving in a reasonably good natured way despite the ferries and dinghy racing. Actually, I used to quite like to see all manner of folk enjoying themselves on the water

The only times I used to see a problem was when the old Swedish royally owned 12 used to ghost up river on a summer evening. The long mainboom and poled out jib almost took over the entire fairway at times.

these days the HM frowns on bigger boats sailing too far up river, and like Salcombe and other rivers I seem to recall spinnakers are banned.

I'll keep my eyes peeled! I'm just about to send my cheque off for the burgee. Should be around over the w/e - weather depending. I only live about 5 mins from the boat so I only have to look out the window to check the weather.

Re: Sailing up

Yup
there is a local bye-law that says, if you have an engine, you MUST use it upstream of the Harbourmaster's office - FAT CHANCE

actually, I don't mind seeing a sailing boat ghosting up under sail when it's quiet but the bustards who sail up on a Sunday evening with upwards of 30 boats behind all shunting in and out of gear, well they must all have engine failure YEAH!!

Re: Sailing up

Is this true?

I understand they have tried to ban spinnakers but are having trouble enforcing it but banning sailing?

Re: Sailing up

OOps!

I had better leave the engine out as I am one of those who enjoy sailing up the river. (soory!)
