Planing a passage in May from Naajad factory in Hennen back to sunny Scotland. Planning stop at Mandal southern norway before hop across the North sea. Any thoughts on Mandal from your experiance or posible better stop off point before North sea leg.

The whole southern shore of Norway is wonderful and if you can spare a bit of time do so. As to Mandal, the harbour itself is not particularly great, there is a very good anchorage two miles out to the SSW called Banke Bukta. Unusual for Norway it has a large space with good holding and an almost constant depths of 10m. Witha reasonably fast dinghy it is easy to go into town from there.
My more favorite stop would be a bit further west around Cape Lindesnes at Farsund, nice little place, new marina. We didn't go to the maraina then, but moored right accross the street from the fine pizza place. Anyway, plenty space and very secure and nice. If you get anything larger than a 460 don't go under the bridge beyond Farsund into the fjord, we broke our lightning terminal trying to do so. Say hello to the nice folks at Najad in Henan, particularly to Olof Seiving and Leif Bengtson!
We went this route two years ago, you can find pictures of the particular places at out website.

Thanks Harald, had already looked at your Web site last week, found it on the Najaad home page. You have done a good job of it and obviously very pleased with your 490. good sailing to you and all your family.

Good question. I called up a few places and talked to a nice guy at clyde marina in Ardrossan and that was the only place I found where I could have the boat in a shed over the winter. Was spoiled from Sweden where they have clinically clean and heated winter hotels for boats;-)

You should have a real great cruise, hope you have soem time for it. I love the 373, one of the most balanced boats I have seen. Thought I'd get one in a few years when I'm back from world cruising....

I agree; Farsund is a good place to start from. If you've come out from Henan northabout round Orust you will be aware of the intricate pilotage anyway. Farsund is less challenging. You can also go further round the unsheltered coast of Norway if it helps at all. Egersund is reckoned to be good - havent been there. Sirevag is close to Jarens Rev and comfortless but a big fishing port.
Both Mandal and Farsund are good but I'm not sure I'd want to come out of Farsund in a new boat at night.

Did this last year in an Albin Vega which we were delivering from Varburg in Sweden to the W. Coast of Scotland. We took our departure from Kristiansand - it's 320 miles to Peterhead and took us 71 hours. Kristiansand is easy to leave at night if necessary, has good shops and the folk who run the marina are friendly.
