A boatyard or machine shop charges around £25 an hour for labour, yet the worker is likely to recieve less than £10 of that. Its a standard mark up to cover overheads.
erm...............must be a lot of overheads in making a call and filling a name on a form....................must take at least..................err..........................a minute!
But surely Sunsail will be aiming to cover their overheads on the yacht charter costs? Where the skipper is an "optional extra", I'd have thought that a smaller "arrangement fee" would be more appropriate. Unless they are paying the unoccupied skippers a retainer?
Something tells me you are not an employer. If you were, you might take a different view, knowing the costs involved in employing someone, even on a casual basis. If you are an employee, I think you would be surprised at what you really cost your employer. I wouldn't, though, more's the pity.
mm but skipper an boat are there to be paid for if boat is out or not
this is not knew
i donot see all of the money i am charged out at
but i donot have to provide my desks ( i have 2 in 2 offices) rent rates bills IT support accounts payroll HR.
ask your mechanic how much of the £85 quid an hour he sees next time you get the car fixed
<hr width=100% size=1><font color=red>if guinness is good for you. i must be very very good</font color=red>
I think this is just about par for the course with temps/ casual workers. In Liverpool hire a menial (been there, seen that, got the T-shirt) accounts clerk at about £6.50/hour and you'll be paying £11.75 - £13.50/hr to the Agency (+VAT) and that sort of mark-up seems pretty typical.
Only very big employers can face down the agencies on this. One household name employer told its agencies, "We're rationalising our list of agencies - you can have (wage + NI) * 130%. Take it or leave it"!
Me neither, but be fair, the GP on the sale is 43% not 75%. Not unusual for most businesses but I would agree rather a large contribution to overhead if there is no overhead to speak of!!!
Something has got to fund all those boats at Port Solent I see every time I drive home from Gosport.
Have a good weekend everyone
...to do things in a hurry on a Friday afternoon. Yes, agreed - 40 ish gross margin, 75 ish mark-up. I still don't reckon there's much profit in it once you've taken off a fixed overhead - and I bet that's the way their thinking works.
Sorry I disagree - given these skippers are self-employed, there is very little overhead involved. A 40% mark up would be reasonable if the skippers were full time Scumsail employees, so they pick up NI, sickness and holiday pay.
Mars........................................ igle wonki da dooooo slopty...............................in Earth speak that means ...you pay peanuts you get monkeys.
