St Peter Port Woes

We have an open cockpit plus sprayhood which was down when sailing virtually the whole trip (even upwind F5). We also inherited a bimini with the boat which was up every day, sometimes under sail too. In harbour the sprayhood went back up with it's centre window rolled up - gives shade plus funelled ventilation. We even went out and bought one of those spinnaker thingies to fit the forehatch to suck in a real draft. For once it was nice to have to fight off the sun instead of the wind and rain!

4 weeks eh - not sure I'd get SWMBO on board for that time! As it was they deserted us for the trip home as the forecast was 6-7s

It was not long enough either though SWMBO starts pining for the golf course, I was in trouble last year when we were a day late back (bad mussel in Cherbourg) and she missed a golf day with her buddies......

Robin I have to agree...

Was in St Peters Port last week'ish and I have to say the water taxi service is crap, crap at least as to not conform to any kind regular operating times and they never really knew when it would be operating next! Had to use the blow-up, dont mind that but some bastard also didn't mind using it for their own bloody taxi service! Inconsiderate tosser, you know who you are.

The north wall local drunks, what can you say?!!

Rubbish piled up all over really, not so nice.

Voicemail... Whats that all about!!?? I did have on a text some instructions of what to do come through but it all seemed abit complicated!!! Texts worked fine though.

Places we ate at where all very good, some better than others, but all very good.

To me if there is a taxi service offered then it has to be available all the time, half a taxi is no good! We made that point to the GY people at the boat show last year. If we know there is no taxi then we inflate our dinghy, no problem - but to risk a trip ashore with no return guaranteed is a no no.

Eating out in St PP is very good, we like Saltwater and The Absolute End for special meals, Da Nello's and others otherwise and lunch grub is good most places. Blind O'Reilley's Irish Pub though was terrible, we waited ages (they weren't busy) and the batter on my cod was grey and dry like a piece of granite, the fries looked OK but matched the cod perfectly for texture!

By voicemail I mean I could not access my messages on the mobile, apparently because GY Telecom and Cellnet O2 etc cannot agree on charging. In France it was no problem with any of several companies, and F-Itineris all that was required was to dial 901. I use my 'phone for business calls and 4 days with no way to pick up messages is not good, GY is supposed to be a business island I thought. When we left going north we picked up a French service and immediately I could retrieve the TEN messages I didn't know I had.

This is ENGLAND....they are called CHIPS not 'fries'.

Could you name a few good places to eat and where they are?? For some reason I've always struggled to find anywhere any good in St Peter Port

We spent 2 nights at St Peter Port in past fortnight-small enough to fit within marina (and fortunate enough to get individual finger pontoon) and didn't experience problems others mention-but-shame to see that the St Peter Port market refurbishment no further forward this year than last - bluntly grotty and food on sale did not look at all appealing-huge contrast to St Helier markets and impressed by new cinema and fun swimming pool complex completed at St Helier since our last visit last summer-very popular with our children (recommend saturday morning childrens cinema at £1 each especially!)
Still enjoy a beer at Channel Islands Yacht club overlooking marina and appreciated again that they have in the chidrens area upstairs a nintendo console game which certainly appeal to our 3.
We were surprised how quiet the Channel Islands were especially given bank holiday weekend.
Agree with comments about Havre Gosselin-used mooring bouy there last year and only time in entire 2 weeks cruise that any of the children sea sick!

Few Xmas ago spent a week in the St Pierre Park in Guernsey.
Spent one evening in a Thai resturant just off the sea front in St PP. Nice meal & very nice waitress..

SWMBO is one of our colonial cousins so the 'fries' just slipped out! British chips though are generally edible, Blind O'Reilley's were Irish and very definitely not, so did not qualify either as fries or chips.

Glad to hear Da Nellos is still there. We used to patronise it when Swan Weeks were held in St PP back in the '80s. Always thought it was the best seafood I'd ever eaten outside of France and one or two shi-shi places in the west end of London.
