Should there be a keel band?

Am I correct in thinking that there should be a keel band on my boat but that it’s been removed and modified at some time with wood?

Its got a wooden wear strip, it looks like it has done its job of protecting the keel, It needs replacing with new wood and some minor gell work.

A stainless keelband is good but would pass any shock impacts to the GRP.

Could be interesting to make band in two lengths so if damaged the outside strip can be unscrewed without affecting the first part fixed to the hull
