Original boat paperwork

I'm in the process of buying a 2017 'one owner from new' boat, the agreed purchase price is over £200k, a couple of questions on the scanned paperwork that I've seen so far:

- The VAT certificate is on plain paper and not the boat manufacturers headed notepaper, it has been signed by a director of the company, am I correct in thinking it should be on company headed paper?
- The Bill of Sale is saying 'in consideration of the sum of £xxxxxxx paid by xxxxxx the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged'. The amount paid has been redacted ,am I correct in assuming that when I get the original paperwork it should be in the unredacted form?

The original sales invoice from the builder to the buyer has been requested, but has not been supplied as yet.

The boat was built in the UK, and I intend cruise Europe as well as UK

Thanks all
If the boat qualifies under 744C then no VAT is payable. Presumably the document you have is confirming that the boat is qualifying so no VAT invoice will exist. The builder/seller to first owner is responsible for correctly applying VAT and the original invoice should show the zero rating and their VAT number. However it could well be that they were not VAT registered and absorbed all the input VAT on bought in materials. In that case I would look for evidence that they have an opinion from HMRC that the boat is a qualifying vessel under 744.

If you are buying it as a qualifying vessel (that is presumably for residential only, not pleasure) then no VAT is payable. In the unlikely event of taking a residential boat to the EU nobody there will be in the least interested in any UK VAT matters. I am guessing that the boat is a wide beam residential boat. The Bill of Sale is important as that is the best evidence of title. There is no need for any mention of money on the BoS as it is transfer of title NOT an invoice or receipt, although it is common to use the term "£1 and other considerations" because a sale contract requires some form of consideration - but it is really not necessary to make the BoS valid for transfer of title.

In my opinion you want to ask for .
Original purchase invoice to prove uk vat paid from builder if it was direct or dealer to first and only / current owner .
Any details of a finance agreement past or present if possible .
If it was on finance is it part one registered.

Sounds a bit strange there is no paperwork on a one owner boat .

Make the seller / broker work for his money, if you buy it with little or no paperwork you will end up with all the headaches when you try to sell it , I’ve been there .

If it is a qualifying vessel under 7444C then VAT will not have been paid because it is exempt. He needs confirmation from HMRC or the builder that it is exempt and not sure the letter on unheaded paper without a VAT number is sufficient.

You are right about paperwork for a pleasure boat, but this does not seem to be the case here

Here is what my original VAT invoice looks like.
Not very impressive.

The white boxes are where I masked the previous owners name, address and signature.

AS it was issued by HMRC (because it was a private import) that is sufficient.

Invoices from VAT registered sellers like boat builders or dealers are very different as they need the supplier's business name and VAT registration number then sufficient detail to connect directly to the boat. So typically that would include the make and model of the boat and now its WIN (previously CIN or HIN)

However all irrelevant if the boat is indeed a "Qualifying Vessel" as no VAT is payable.

Thanks for all the replies.

I am now happy with the paperwork provided, namely:

- Various invoices from the builder to the buyer for the staged payments during construction, all 0% VAT
- Bill of sale from builder to buyer
- VAT certification from builder (I'll live with it not being on company letterhead)

It is classified as a qualifying vessel under VAT Notice 744C, so all good to go in completing the purchase.

Seasons greetings to all
