A bit of a thread drift. I have been following “The Sailing Brothers” I have watched all of their round UK videos and found them to be a genuine couple of lads. The next set of videos I shall be watching will be getting their Rival 34 ready for an Atlantic circuit. Unfortunately and I hope I am wrong they seem to have jumped on the patreons band wagon. I hope it doesn’t go to their heads as that would be a shame. An American single handed sailor worth a looking at is Sam Holmes, once again he has his patreons.
don't worry, the lads don't have it in them. Really genuine guys.

Have you not just described every youtube channel? Even the ones I love are inevitably stuck in a loop of self promotion because they need the traffic to generate the income that justifies the fancy camera equipment and time spent editing entertainment for the viewer.
Most of the sailing ones from the past few years yes, which is why I don't tend to watch them.

There are a few that put good content out, such as technical advice, "how to" stuff, and the like, but this couple just strike me as a pair of ex-BBC/media people, who took early retirement, put their lump sum into a boat, rented out their house in Wimbledon village, and set off to create themselves a new business and income stream, whilst sitting pretty on their final salary pensions and the rental income.

I think I’m right in saying that they sold up to buy the boat, I seem to remember that being said in one of the videos.

you watch enough to complain!

You may have the details right - but they are not quite how they present them: Live aboard cruising | our experiences so either you have some sort of stalker-level obsession with them or you jumped to a lot of conclusions. Even if those conclusions were true I'm not sure what the issue would be with someone taking a lump sum, buying a boat and then making a "retirement income" from documenting their travels. Lots of people only partially retire and have some sort of secondary income.

In principle, I could sell up and do the same thing. I don't have his videography skills, and my better half doesn't have her experience scripting and talking to camera, but I suspect we could go buy a nice boat, go on an adventure and tell a reasonable story and with enough effort we'd monetise the videos. Why don't I? Because I think the story telling would both be quite an invasion and a burden. I don't need random strangers debating whether my pension is cooshy or needing to get an edit out each week to ensure I can pay the marina fees. It looks to me as though she still needs to be in her bikini or have their 20's daughters in the thumbnails to get the clicks up and that they change where they go / what they do to make the footage.

There are a few that put good content out, such as technical advice, "how to" stuff, and the like,
They do some of this content too - I don't actually think they are as good at that. I'm pretty certain they would not have the following they have if they only did that stuff. I think your mistake is assuming that you "should" like a channel because its a sailing channel, and therefore they are doing something wrong if you don't.

I like 1994 Wish you were here! It makes me feel nostalgic! I don't think I'd describe them as dated/
It's the way that they do pieces to camera in a very scripted way. I wonder if they talk like that when the camera is off ?

so if they openly promote some VPN company you question their thoughts on varnish? Not sure the logic stacks up there.
Maybe it doesn't. But that's the gist of it. And generally for more closely related products or services.

I think you can really only complain about having sponsors if you are willing to be a patreon supporter or pay for youtube in some way.
I suppose I am trying to have my cake and eat it. I watch occasional videos and expect it all for free. I have thrown some money Dylan's way, and joined The Sailing Brothers' Patreon for a while, but other than that I'm expecting the armchair sailors who wish to live vicariously to support these channels- which they do.

I've not seen these people, but do enjoy Patrick Laine, Sam Holmes and Wind Hippie Sailing for similar reasons in that they're 'just' doing it, and relate very well to problems that I'm familiar with on a day to day basis (and beyond).
Wind Hippie in particular, she's 'doing it' in a manner that makes me think that if my younger daughter was sailing, she'd do it like that!

I quite like a scripted and purposeful piece to camera! There’s a few other channels I watch that can be frustrating because they have a long waffle to say something and just seem to waste my time. Even worse are people who clearly had too much wind noise etc but rather than voice it over or redub that but leave the inaudible waffle in.

there’s a nice channel on the west of Scotland - rib not sails (although he did put a topper mast on it for a while!) , but a retired bloke who tells a logical (and I suspect sometimes fanciful!) story: https://youtube.com/@donnywilcox he’s pretty good with a camera and originally did no audio so knew how to tell a story without waffling for the sake of it. Never seen any sponsors! might appeal to some of you who are looking for something different from the usual bikinis, med/Caribbean, couple seeing how much they can make types…. Only posts when he’s been for an “adventure” and had time to edit it so you don’t get weekly posts just for the sake of it.

I met them when they set off on the Rally Portugal and later when we all arrived in Baiona. I watched a few but got bored for the same reasons as others found. Personally their lifestyle doesn't appeal to me but each to their own. As they both came from TV, the production should be good.

For a little of both eye and ear candy, Sailing Rox plays a mean violin and that's how she supports her sailing. Enjoy!

Edit. Direct link to one of her music video's
Thanks for there heads up.
I'll put in a mention for Magic Carpet- a very pretty boat, some interesting sailing, with great musical accompaniment.

I like their channel, the places they visit, and the balance between sailing challenges, problems, destinations, helpful info, opinions and facts. Iv'e learnt some stuff from them. But I do skip through some of their material if it doesnt grab me. Probably the best production qualities, as one might expect.

Some of you really need to take a chill pill.
Or change channel. Or stop watching YT. Or just stop moaning.
Or all the above.

I'm another fan - in fact i signed up as a Patron at £4 pm!!! Cheap compared to Netflix and probably watch more of it.

Whilst production values generally are a big part of it, for me they are relatable people living a relatable life style. - Whilst they might own a boat that is worth £250k + they sold a UK property to do so. How many of us living in the south east and with the money to own an AWB could also do that.

They do seem to have reasonable income ( plenty of toys and eating out etc) but again how many ( especially slighter older) people have decent work / private pensions / consultancy / contracting income and so could also do that.

I'm sure they are smart enough to realise that Judy in a bikini is better than Steve in one but it's hardly tits and arse broadcasting, instead a good blend of travelogue and technical material. I;m not convinced about some of the arguments re more traditional designs re modern ones but i think it's important to here people doing it express such opinions based on their experience

We recognise Fairisle for what it is, a way of funding their life style. However like a lot of channels once they sign up to Patreon they feel the need to post a video to trigger another round of charges when they have nothing of interest to say. I like watching the travgelogue and fix-it videos. I am not at all interested when he does a programme with a load of other Youtubers[sic] all sitting around together being self indulgent. much if his technical stuff is quite sound but not all of it he foolishly endorsed a Noddy sub-aqua system for which he received some quite negative feedback.

There are only two YouTube channels that have held out attention.

1. Sailing Yacht Florence
This is a young couple who have almost completed a full circumnavigation. the first few episodes were very amaturish, but after a while they got better equipment. However their videos are unfailingly interesting. They are not really sponsored apart from a set of sails, which they badly needed. I strongly recommend this channel, start at the begining and get through the first few very short episodes and enjoy the ride.

2. NBSJ
Eric is a loon and I love him. If you haven't seen his videos, be prepared for some extreem sailing in possibly the most beatutiful part of the world. He is typically sailing from the Shetlands and further north. His filming is stunning and gets better with every eipsode. He is the antidode to every other sailing channel, he offers virtually no coverage of the places he visits, which is a shame. So we watch him wait for bad weather to sail to the next stunning location and as soon as he arrives it looks like he is off to the next place. It is completely mad and brilliant.

The mad viking is the type of sailor your mother warned you about when you started sailing. Quite insane, but fun to watch.
Although he too has taken to pushing bits of kit on behalf of his sponsors. Fine if its something saily I guess, but a five minute section on a VPN is not really why I got into sailing.
