I would like to do my Day Skipper theory and practical course (sail) combined in April in the UK. The problem is I have to fly in from Europe and do not want to hire a car because i won't need it most of the time. Any recommendations of suitable sailing schools within easy reach of an airport?

Southampton is bristling with sea schools, but the airport is out of town.

Jersey could be another option.

Although Southampton Airport is out of town, it has a railway station of its own, from which you can reach the centre pretty easily. You can also get to Bursledon station, at the top of the Hamble, where some of the sailing schools can be found (e.g. Hamble School of Yachting). It's a bit of a hike from Bursledon to Mercury Marina, though... you might be better to get a taxi from Southampton Central.

You could try BOSS (British Offshore Sailing School) in Hamble Point Marina, which is a 10 minute taxi ride away from Southampton Airport. They will also give you the details of local Taxi firms

I'll second the BOSS recommendation (http://www.boss-sail.co.uk/). I'm car free, and they've picked me up from the Hamble Train Station every time I've taken a course (and a return ride, too). I also like that they use Westerly Fulmars and Sigma 38s, boat I could conceivable own, instead of 44 foot racing sleds...

I would look into Plymouth and Exeter Airports too.
But Soton is pretty easy, there are regular buses into town.

My advice, don't choose the school by it's location, choose it by it's reputation. If that means you have to pay a few bob for a taxi - it will be money well spent

Everywhere on the Solent is a train ride and a short taxi ride from Birmingham or Southampton airports. Add another train and a tube ride and you have Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted to choose from as well.

Where do you live in Europe? Whilst I might be doing the UK out of some needed income, have you thought about doing it in sunnier climes?

I can very highly recommend Rob & Jules at www.rusailing.com in Lagos on The Algarve. A €7 train ride from Faro, (€15 or so in a taxi from airport to station). At least one other in this parish has used them and has actually converted from mobo to raggie as a result

Birmingham to Southampton is 140 odd miles. There are half a dozen airports nearer.

Did you mean Bournemouth perhaps?

What about Gibraltar .. Plenty of sailing .. Try Allabroad .. No connection .. Just enjoyed 2 weeks sailing .. Airport is a walk from the Marina

one way care hire not that expensive, and on occasions lower cost than train when i have left the boat away from base

Another option, which I did last year, is to take the ferry to Portsmouth. I took the Le Havre - Portsmouth ferry and spent a night in Portsmouth which gave me enough time for a quick visit of the historic dockyards. Then took a train to Southampton where the school was located. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.
