Signed. Like others on here I can't believe how easily the Americans have given up. The liferaft scenario offered above seems very plausible indeed. Here's hoping for a positive outcome.

I guess the two PLB fixes received may have contributed to it. The CG would have had a pretty accurate idea of where any survivors were and could have covered the search area in quite a short time. The USCG web site talks about the search being "suspended", not "abandoned" - pending further information. If they knew to within a few miles where they were a few hours ago and have searched without finding anything, there is little merit in expanding the search zone dramatically, is there?
