Reefing

Hi there,

I have a bit of a problem with my headsail reefing system.

The foil is broken in two places, and needs replacing. Not so difficult if I knew the make, but I don't.

The drum is made from stainless with SCRR engraved into it. I've run an internet search and the only result was from ONE boat for sale which has the same system.

The foil seems to be from a later date but has no markings.

Is it possible to buy a foil "off the shelf" and fix it to a drum ? Has anyone ever done this?

All chandlers I've spoken to would not make any recommendations without knowing the make of the system.

Any help would be appreciated, and would save me a wad of cash for a new system.

Cheers
Jim

When I had a Z Spars system fitted the foil came in lengths about 3 metres long. The bottom of the foil went into a slot in the drum which was machined to fit it as was the slider to which the halard attached. At both ends, there was a screw which held the foil in place in the drums. The lengths of foil had an overlappping sleeve inside and they were secured together by grub screws. Obviously you have to take the forestay off to put new foil on.

Your problem would seem to me to be one of finding a foil section taht fits into the bottom drum. The fit has to be good.

If you do take your forestay off do not forget to support the mast with the halyard, coming down onto a bridle between the cleats. Do not go onto the bow roller fittin as this is likely to beonly strong enough fo r downward forces and will bend if you apply too much force upward toit
