LLet\'s get real on this.....

LOOK!

This is the flow.

If we don't go with the flow, we will get branded as reactionary old f-ar-ts.

Then they will tax our boats off of us and like other capital boat owners on the European continent we will need to seek a flag of convenience or reduce our boating to something old and <26ft or so kept in a municipal marina.

And anyway, it won't be long now until Citizen Ken challenges for leadership of the Labour Party so forget any return to Conservatism. It won't happen.

Your boat is an expression of your indecent capitalism and as Brother Ken said "Capitalism has caused the death of more people than Hitler"

That is the new order wether we like it or not.

Re: LLet\'s get real on this.....

Just a wind up of course fellow Brits!

I still offer my burning program for any British boat that moors alongside with a ring-o-stars hung on his stern. (The Zippo is kept to hand in the cockpit locker for this purpose)

The tricolour nations need this sort of identity as they have lost any individualism in the hurried choice of any old three colours slapped up on a flag to salute. A colourblind friend tells me that they all look the same to him!

Now the Greeks? THEY won't take this nonsense lying down.

Incidentally, I have specified my last three cars without the blue flash down the left side of the numberplates. No problem

A pernicious practice

wearing an euro-flag with a minute national defacement.

Not only is the damn thing the wrong shape, having been designed by a landlubber, but the whole purpose of a national flag is to know what language in which to hail its crew. The national defacement is so small that it's impossible to tell.

I thnk you'll find that they're ALL breaking international law as the soddin' things (EU ensigns) have no official recognition.

As a convinced Europhil, I think the "ensign" together with the ECB remit to be deeply flawed.

English

is rapidly replacing French around the EU and especially in the next wave of entrants.

In Czech, Austria, Deutschland, Spain, French is frequently not on the sign-boards and English is usually the second language.

It's more likely that French will be the threatened tongue - The Academie Francaise's paranoia is firmly rooted in probability.

Stop trying to cause Pom hysteria - they're thick enough to believe you.

For one thing its blue and will be a glorious one in the eye for all those snooty sailors who go to all the trouble of getting a Royal warrant so they can wear a (very expensive) defaced blue.

LOL!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

In that case, I will get a special warrant and join the first boat club who is willing to fly a red ensign, just to get at you!!! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

The one reason I love having the Blue Ensign is just to wind people like you up, it makes me laugh how stressed out people get about it, and it was zero effort to get one and it matches the stripes on the side of my boat.

I fly it because I am proud to be British, I am proud that I serve my Country by honouring the traditions that people have fought and died for, I believe it represents the standards which have made this fine nation what it is today. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Is this another one of the ficticious "straight banana" issues that the press dreams up to fill space on slow news days? Has anyone checked the veracity of the claim that this policy is being developed by the EU or is yet another complete red herring that we are using to wind ourselves up.
IMHO most such alleged stupidities that are not complete fabrications are caused by our own UK officials interpreting EU regulations in the most extreme manner just to cover their own a*ses rather than applying common sense and a minimalist approach to general regulations which have to cover cultures from Greece to Ireland.

This is not a wind up it is a proposal by some SPANISH MEP to be included in new EU legislation dealing with the "Transfer of Cargo and Passenger Ship registration within the EU" (or something close to that). Our (British) MEPs, or some of them think that defacing the symbol of our national maritime pride, is no more than sticking some stars on the car number plate.
Whilst the thread on this subject has been good fun, and exeeded all expectations. May I suggest that if you put MEP in the search engine you will find your local hero and give him, or her, some stick on the subject!

Road tax

Its all very well bringing in fines to try to stop these people from driving without all the particulars but I have seen with my own eyes having worked in an area with a high concentration of non-nations illegal or otherwise. All you have to do is not register the vehicle in your name. Then, even if you are caught driving it you can just say its not yours. Give a false name so they can not trace you. I know this is how they avoid paying road tax and insurance because I've seen it. The police are fed up with it but are powerless to do anything about it. One instance, two 15 year old boys that lived in the house behind our shop were driving a car up and down the street for fun. We called the police. When the police arrived the two boys jumped out and ran indoors. When the police knocked they were unable to prove the boys were driving (just our say so not good enough) and couldn't establish what their names were anyway so had to give up (somalies, so very difficult). Policeman then tells me that even if they had caught them driving he would have to let them go because its not an arrestable offence. Later, when we confronted them and told them to move the car away from our shop and put it outside their house we were threatened with knives by four members of the family. Phoned police but nothing they can do.
Now this post will probably get S**tcanned because of racial content which just about sums up whats wrong with this country and I for one am starting to come to the conclussion that they can stick their ensign (to keep it a nautical posting) where the sun don't shine cos its really not worth all the bother to protect the traditions of a country that lets this sort of thing continue. I just want to find a nice country that will adopt me, but of course no-one will have us.

"Wearing an euro-flag with a minute national defacement. Not only is the damn thing the wrong shape, having been designed by a landlubber ..."

If you ever find youself passing through Gibralter, pop into the Maritime Museum and have a look at the Blue Ensign that Nelson flew from the Victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. Can't get much more British than that, now can you? It is only slightly longer in the fly than in the hoist and, though it may grieve many to hear this, it is much closer to the modern Euro Flag in shape than it is to the ensign we fly from our taff rails today. Tradition is not static - it evolves, sometimes for some particularly obscure reasons.

Having said that, there is nothing to say that the National Flag in the corner of a Euro Ensign has to be so small or that the proportions of the Ensign would have to follow that of the Euro Flag. Something far closer to a current blue ensign defaced in the fly with the Euro Stars would be perfectly possible if the Admiralty had the will to sanction it. But then again, pigs might swim the channel!

P.S. To any readers suffering elevated blood pressure - do please read my first post on this subject. I am only suggesting an alternative for those who would like it, not a compulsory change-over.

Re: A pernicious practice

Do you know, when I "did" Gib, one of the few places I didn't get to was the maritime Museum - I blame much of it on the cantor of one of the local synagogues who dragged me off for a particularly alcoholic lunch.

Couldn\'t agree more..

if one contributed to the conspiracy theory of history one might suspect our drafting civil servants of trying to so damage British interests and alienate the average voter as to cause us to pull out of the EU.

Mind you the majority of German and French politicians who press on "ever deeper and ever closer" to political union might be well advised to take note of what their constituents think/feel - or they might just end up on one of those handily placed/proportioned lamp-posts to which I have referred in other posts or, if fortunate, out of office.

You have my sympathy

to avoid the worst excesses of an urbanised culture (because that is what you are highlighteng), move into a less extreme, rural area.

As the UK is probably, of all European countries, farthest down the road to urbanisation you could consider moving to France (x3 habitable area and same population) or even staying in the UK, but well away from the massive conurbations of which most of the country is composed.
