Just a lot of tosh. We use the red duster because the UK is a signatory to the International Treaty on Laws of the Sea. The EU isn't a signatory. End of story.

Obviously this MEP just woke up to the fact there's an E. Parliament election this year and he needs to justify his existence with a few headlines.

Over here ...

Annual Condition check of car includes compulsory road tax. No pay - no Technical Pass sticker for window and serious news if traffic police catch you .....Latvia
Estonia is even more obvious as the year of Technical Survey is stuck on your number plate for all to see ...... tax and technical paid same time again.

Re: Over here ...

Nigel,

The problem here is the cars that do not have MOT or road tax. The goverment say that the reason for road tax is to keep an eye on MOT etc. This of course is rubbish because if you don't have tax then noone knows if you have an MOT.

The whole question of moving the tyax to fuel comes up on a regular basis and then falls in parliament. I have never understood why.

Uh hum .... I have a UK car !

But I Tax when I get back to Uk ..... few days later fill in my SWORN and get most of it back again. Over a 12 month peruiod it costs me approx. 3 months tax, for approx. 2 months use.

OK so many have said - use Hire Car ...... well ok - but with all my boat gear and the rest !! It is actually cheap enough and car seems to fly through its MOT's etc.

OK for me it would be marvelous to pay the tax via Petrol .... as then I would be only paying for the miniscule I use !! But I can also say that when I am in UK - I drive a lot and burn a lot of fuel !!!!!

Isn't that fairer to pay for how much you use the road.

Re: Uh hum .... I have a UK car !

Maybe I was bad in my wording ..... I don't really know ...... I suppose I'm concerned that any changes will only be at increased costs to the motorist. But then again I have always objected to paying for time I don't use the roads.

I get away lightly at moment, but have to fork out a whack to tax for the short time then claim it back. If I could tax for a shorter period etc. then it could be better for me.

Swings and roundabouts really.

Maybe Nigel but I don't think it will ever happen unfortunately so us road tax payers will have to keep on paying for the 1.4 million non payers.

I'm quite confused by some of this thread. I didn't know cars had to wear ensigns, taxed or otherwise.

I rather like the proposed EU ensign. For one thing its blue and will be a glorious one in the eye for all those snooty sailors who go to all the trouble of getting a Royal warrant so they can wear a (very expensive) defaced blue.

Re:Blue Ensign

Ho Hum! Here we go again. Why is it that a) some people (usually red ensign wearers) get so huffed up about blue ensigns, and
b) there is apparently so much difficulty in understanding something so very simple. Even Tom Cunliffe got it wrong in his published answers to Novembers YM quiz. Shame on you Tom.
For clarification:
They are not Royal Warrants they are Admiralty Warrants
In the vast majority of cases admiralty warrants are held by the club not the individual
The club member is given a permit from the club to wear the club ensign. In my club this 'very expensive' and troublesome procedure costs ten pounds to pay for the printing and laminating of the permit, which is all done at the same time you register your boat with the club in the hope of getting a cheap mooring (main reason for joining club).
Blue ensign costs no more than Red Ensign.
My elitist club keeps the noveau rich out by charging the extortionate annual membership fee of £24. They're so afraid ordinary people might join they will have nothing to do with us!!!! If you want something really unique join the RAFSA if they'll have you. Even more unique (and a lot less expensive) than the RYS.
You don't need a big expensive boat, just 27ft LOA. and up to a minimum specified weight, which I could find out for you if you really want to know. I think our different colour ensigns are great because they are something special about britain and her seagoing heritage, and represents precisely the kind of spirit expressed by Nigel (who's english boat is unfortunately too small to wear a priviledged ensign no matter what club he joined, though she certainly has the weight) and I always regard it as a priviledge to moor up along side such a fine prime example of the Great British seafaring spirit. We'll drink a Guiness or two for you on the seventeenth and the 23rd Nige!!!!!! Land of hope and glory, Drinkers of much tea.....la,la, etc Ooops !!!! Sorry. Have waxed lyrical, but I spit on the grave of the EU. Vive la Difference (I wonder what the French is for that)!!!

It's about time the UK citizens got together to end the PC bullshit once and for all.

On my little boat on the Witham I have 4 flags. The English to upset the Scottish and the Welsh, the Confederate to upset the Yanks, The Union Jack to upset the purist, and the Skull & Crossbones in case I have missed anyone.

And did you know, I can still be convicted and hung for piracy while flying it.

Quite agree about UK citizens getting together to ban PC. The sooner the better!
However as I am a Scot and you are English I would like to upset you by pointing out that the Cross of Saint Andrew is the first "flag" in the UNION FLAG with George and Patarick being added. Also you do not fly a Union "JACK"! this can only be flown from the JACK STAFF of one of Her Majesties Ships! Everyone else flies the UNION FLAG.
RULE BRITANNIA!

I would not like to see the Red Ensign defaced with the Euro Stars as I don't believe that any member country should be forced to abandon its traditions. However, I would like to see a law passed by our Government to permit the wearing of a Euro Flag defaced with the Union Flag as an alternative ensign. Many European Yachts, particularly French, German and Dutch, wear Euro Flags defaced with their National Flag and I would very much like to be able to the same - legally.

Re: RULE BRITANNIA

Long live the Red, White & Blue Ensigns.

My car has one of the new numberplates with the EU symbol and stars both front and rear.

I have, probably illegally, covered tjese disgusting symbols with neat, stickon Union Flags. I'd like to see the fuss if I was taken to court for this. The government could fall!!! (I wish it would)
