Have installed a radar this season, but I think I need some training to use it for stuff other than collision avoidance.

Any recommendations for courses in Hampshire?

I've been told you can heat cornish pasties with it. Bung 'em in a bag hoist 'em up power up the radar & hey presto.

Navigation, and not just collision avoidance. Might as well get my money's worth from the machine. And the idea for warming pasties is good - the raydome is large enough to microwave at least half a dozen.

As a matter of interest - which sort did you get and how have you finally decided to mount it? We're off to the SBS with a view to buying one. Choice is coming down to Raymarine (interfaces with the chart plotter) or JRC (cheap and seems to do the job based on experience). The best solution I've seen so far had the display head on a pivot in front of the binnacle which is lifted up so the helm can see it.

because each bit of kit is a bit different, the best way is to learn how to use it on your own boat. I'm in Port Solent and a chap came along for the day to do the course on board. Same price for whole family too. PM me if interested.

Hi Tony

I went for the JRC 1500, at around £860. I thought it was better to get the larger radome.

I hummed and hahed about LCD location. In the end I placed it at the chart table, so I could compare what I could see with a chart. I reckon that for fog, the wife would steer to a GPS repeater, and I would pop down every few minutes to look at the screen.

Jimi, a regular poster, decided to put his LCD on the binnacle

If I had gone for a chartplotter/radar integrated solution, then binnacle would have been the immediate choice.

You'll see that Ive decided to do a formal course, as I suspect there's more to it than spotting blips on the screen.
