Question, How much does a small jiffy bag cost and a 1ST class stamp?

Answer, £5

Thats what a Lewmar spares agent has charged me for posting a small plastic hatch handle which is the weight of a feather...

Is this on?

Thats the same price that my company charge for a Special 12 delivery. Thats a Post Office Guaranteed Next Day before 12 o'clock signed for delivery service.

For a straight !st Class Post Service we charge £2 but as its not signed for if it gets lost then you take the risk. They havn't lost any yet!

I ordered this thing Tuesday for the weekend, not until Sunday did it get into my hands, as it must have come Sat. that's 4 days....
Yacht parts in Plymouth is the place. I am quite prepared to shame them. I actually have a big boat with 14 hatches so could have given them a shed load of buisness but at that price I shan't bother. In fact it would probably be cheaper for me to drive there myself..

They will almost cartainly make this their standard charge for UK orders. I dont think it is unreasonable that they charge on top of the cost of the just the stamp, they will have to envelope it, someone to pack the envelope etc this must all cost them something. Its not uncommon for most mail order businesses to charge a standard fee for packaging and handling.

I agree that most businesses will charge more than the stamp cost. The issue here is how much more. The prices I have quoted are what my company charges to despatch goods to trade customers in UK. Not marine products but the charges are more than the cost price of the postage.

Just to make you feel better... On Friday last at 1715hrs I phoned Brown and Gammons the MG people for 2 parts for the SU carbs on my MGB. They arrived on Monday at 0830 in a jiffy bag etc... Cost ? 87p....Polite helpfull efficient..

Thats the different between the 2 industries.... 2 weeks back when I sent in my "ready to launch slip".. I enclosed a polite note to say that I would appreciate being advised when my boat was due to be launched. I had re packed the stern gland etc. and wanted to be present in case of problems... Answer... Could'nt possibly do that Sir far to busy... and to think I pay these people 2000 quid a year... In my view the Marine industry is due for a popular uprising, I'm sick of people either trying to cheat or rip me off.

Have a nice day.. Nick

ReYes, ripped off

Here here,
Sick of being ripped off too. I have started questioning the price of nearly everything I buy in chandlers, they look at me asthough I'm from another planet. I mean if more people said something....
Mind you I see lots of people cheerfully throwing money away in Chandlers paying over the odds for things that would obviously be far cheaper elsewhere, like halfords, millets, B&Q etc

Do shop around

I believe in supporting chandlers, rather than buying from some souless mail order outfit, then wondering where all the chandlers went when you want a snap shackle at 3.oo pm on a Sunday afternoon. But there is competition between chandlers. There are three chandlers in Lymington. Varnish, brushes, etc are cheapest in one. Cordage is cheapest in another. And my anti-fouling came from the third.
