I have been ranting on for some time about how I'd like a PLB and AIS on the same device well it is finally here!

Big news, thanks for that. However I get lots of dire warnings of Ocean Safety’s Website being dangerous when I try that link, my browser won’t give me access to it. Bizarre, I get something about system clock being wrong. Here’s a link that works:

Ocean Signal rescueME PLB3 Personal Locator Beacon with AIS and Return Link Service

Please don't call me captain, I've never held the rank of captain and have no aspirations of doing so at my age. :)

A bit of a beast that one isn't it? More than twice the size and twice the price of separate units.

Great news it's finally out.
PS Does anyone have experience of the Garmin emergency Sat phone device that allows you to text (but not talk)

The too big claims are not accurate. We have Spinlock life jackets which are as small and compact as anything on the market, yet we managed to put a PLB1 on the one side (RescueMe PLB1 Personal Locator Beacon Ocean Signal) DAD034EA-5B81-4E58-8F47-4586FA6D42B0.pngAND an Ocean Signal RescueMe AIS on the other side.

It’s not too much of a squeeze and there’s no strain on the zips.

However having the two in one is a real step forward. I have no doubt it’ll fit in most every lifejacket. It might cost £500 but that’s cheaper than the two devices you have to have for full benefits now. In addition the PLB1 has to be activated manually; only the Rescue Me AIS transmitter is automatically set off as the LJ inflates.

Yes - but the PLB3 is 200mm long - so almost 3 times the size of the PLB1. I would be surprised if I could fit that (mainly the length) in my LJ without it being distinctly uncomfortable.

I wonder why the AIS ones are so much bigger than the 406 ones - perhaps they need more space for the antenna and/or a more powerful transmitter for the VHF signal.

Do you notice the gas cylinder and firing mechanism?

Does your rib cage bend in the middle?

It might be worth making up a mock up and trying it out.

I for one will be the first in the queue for one as I've been asking that somebody developed one for over two years. I am quite sure Ocean Signal have more feedback than just me asking for such a device (if not I want my name plastered all over it or six for the boat).

Even a CO2 cylinder is no where near 200mm - but yes when I bring the LJs back for servicing this winter I will have a closer inspection and see.

Now 1 is available I imagine we will see more coming on the market in the next few months - and getting smaller (and cheaper).

It’s 66 mm longer than the rescue-me AIS and we have no problem fitting one of those. In fact it’s the ‘tiny’ PLB1 that is more of a struggle to fit.

Great it is finally available, I have also been looking forward to it for a long time. It was particularly problematic to get the certification, or so I heard, not to make one. I trust the competition will soon be there too, which may have an influence on the price (or not)
