Phoenix of Hamble . . .

The young lady who posed for my life drawing group this week had a large tattoo of a Phoenix over her right thigh, and very fine it looked too. Photos not available.
This poses the question for the artist of how much detail of the tattoo to put into his/her drawing/painting. It's a while since I did any life drawing but most sessions are fairly short in time as I recall. Did you treat the tattoo as a mere suggestion or go into deep detail and run out of time for the rest of the body?

I've always admired PoH (the boat) and I wish I had the time and the skill to acquire her and do the work. Unfortunately I have neither, so have to hope that someone else is similarly motivated but better endowed.

As you say, sessions are often short, anything from a couple of minutes to an hour, but more often half an hour. I mostly draw with Conte sticks on half a sheet of pastel paper. Additional features such as a tattoo or drapery can help but there isn't always time. I included the tattoo on one drawing only. I added it at the end by drawing it in a fluid way to suggest it, though from a viewing distance it looks quite detailed. It is not necessary to draw precisely to show something like a tattoo or a hand because the viewer can fill in the details, though it is critical to be precise about such matters as proportion.

She used to reside in the berth we have which Neil kindly vacated when he could not spend the time he needed to continue all the hard work he put in.

She always looked a fantastic looking Sailing Vessel.

I wish you all the best with her - she deserves to be loved.

Only know what you've probably gleaned here... Neil bought her as a project with a view to long term / long distance sailing plans. He spent time and effort (and I suspect money) on work aboard before changes in priorities / family priorities etc. drew him away from sailing and Phoenix. She sat in Shotley on the hard for some time before being sold - the new owner posted here, I think, earlier in this thread...

Amusing thread...indeed we are planning to become the new keepers of Phoenix. Interested to hear from any with anyone who has direct knowledge of her and her history.
Don’t worry on our behalf, lots of experience of boat ownership....

Do you own Phoenix now? My father used to own her for many years and was very sad to sell her, we had many years of fantastic holidays on her and I still miss her a great deal. I hope she is being looked after.
Sadly my father is no longer with us but we have discovered some of her sails in the attic, I don't know if these would be of interest to you?

Having sailed it from the Solent to Shotley and worked on it too, as well as being in contact with the current owners, it does need a good spruce up, but I know cumulatively thousands of hours went into it, and some bad luck intervened.
Not a boat for me, but lovely for someone eventually.

Send me a PM

All the hard work has been done on her, and whilst she had some cosmetic issues, That’s what they are. The deck needs a good tidy, but the last time I was onboard I thought it was fine. this is one serious solid boat, I suspect the biggest spend would be on new canvas....
Whatever, it's a very purposeful looking boat.

Wonderful to hear from you. Yes we are in the process of restoring her to former glories - PM me?

To update everyone, yes we are the new custodians of Phoenix of Hamble. She now lives on the Itchen in Southampton, rather closer to the Hamble than of late. There is a lot of work to do, not all of it cosmetic, but even in her current slightly down-at-heal state, we do get a lot of compliments, which is lovely.

A lovely end to the story!

Another update (!)
Phoenix has been in her “winter refit” now for 18 months…..I kid you not.
Coppercoat, new engine, new instruments/radar, full respray of topsides,, masts and superstructure, new feathering prop, deck sorted, new standing rigging, windlass, bow thruster, portholes refurbed, skin fittings replaced……
Should be launching in next month or so.
