I think (far from an expert and I'm sure somone will correct me) that the poles you are talking about tend to be on the slightly older Open60's and the rigging goes through the ends of these - see the pics of Sir RKJ's Saga as this is an older boat.
I guess it must help when you have such huge loads going through the rig and hull.

Saw Golding's open 60 coming off a truck last week at Moody's. Amazing machine. 19ft wide at the transom ... and the next wave of open 60s are going to be 22ft wide!
These are deck spreaders but they are on older boats not the new ones, the ones you see now are just rebranded older boats, I think technology has moved on quite a bit!
