Masthead before I had VHF, tricolour and wind thingy up there.
Now stbd spreader.

RYA and RNLI house flags from port spreader.

The burgee is an Owners Association one.
If I belonged to a proper yacht club I would fly the YC burgee from stbd and fly an OA house flag from port except on OA rallies when I would fly the OA burgee from stbd and not use the YC one at all.

Only got a Red Ensign I'm afraid ... :(

We flew it at the top. New york Yacht Club Yacht for members flag.

Went through about 3-4 per year, because they just faded and shredded.

We also had it on the towels too

We blatantly flout the "rules", but have simplified them to the lowest common denominator which hopefully won't offend too many officials (Most of them seem to be inside my computer anyway)
Starboard spreader: Courtesy flag of country I'm visiting _ proper one, no crown on the spanish for instance.
Port spreader : anything I want to say about the people who are on my boat at the moment -club membership , nationality, RLNI, forum, whatever.
Ensign at the stern: my flout - a Saltire red duster rather than the union one...
Nobody as yet has mentioned those blue/starry EU ensigns with the various member nationional flags in the corner. They go down well in the Med and allow people to identify their nationality in a uniform way. Why not?
I have never seen a red (or blue) duster made up with a St Georges cross afloat. Is that because there is no pride in being English within British, or is it because, as perceived by most of the rest of the world, the two are synonymous?
(Ducks below parapet again)

Is there a flag etiquette for unstayed masts?

When I had the lugger the burgee went at the masthead and courtesey flag (St Piran) 3/4 way up a signal hayard between masthead and gunwales set to windward with the burton. As a former fishing vessel I only used an ensign for regattas (when not racing) etc. then worn at the peak of the mizzen yard when sailing or at the head of the mizzen mast at anchor. I must admit that during (not very yachtie) races I kept my burgee up as my indication of wind direction!
