New (to us) boat! SQ58

Hells bell! So sorry to hear that. I bet the captain will be asked a few questions!

Not your problem and no doubt insurance will pay up quickly. Gutted for you though.

Devastating news, hopefully everything goes smoothly on the insurance front and you will be looking for another beaut soon.

Really sorry to hear this tou must be gutted, it looked super in the pictures.

Question for JFM is he see's this
What is the insurance situation as the boat has just been purchased.
Price paid/value of boat only or total just recently spent ie
Boat value + shipping cost + surveys + travel/expense in finding the boat etc.

What rotten news to receive, not at all what you'd be expecting in a shipping company email, and what a horrible loss after all the work, effort and excitement of finding, checking, negotiating and securing an ideal boat! As others have said, 'hope you are very soon back in pocket and getting back on track with your boating plans and dreams.

Just for the records, the cargo ship is now tucked into Portoferraio bay, Elba island.
They diverted there in the early afternoon.
AIS still reports an ETA Nice for today at 16:00 UTC.

I never sympathized with tree huggers, but it's hard to argue with their habit of fingerpointing at ship captains more interested in meeting deadlines than in safety, after what happened... :ambivalence:

Blimey! Just catching up with this thread and couldn’t quite believe what I was reading. Just hope the insurance payout arrives promptly and another boat comes along quickly.

Looking for good news, at least you haven’t lost a season. And perhaps you’ll find a mid-winter bargain

I've just checked the name of the skipper. Schettino. His name rings a bell for some reason

Hi All

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone for their good wishes and support some of which were above and beyond (via pm). This morning I was just very upset about it but as the day has gone on I am now just angry that this was allowed to happen. Probably shouldn't say too much about my thoughts but it will be interesting to see what the report from the captain of the ship says!
Anyway again my sincere thanks to everyone, it was truly heartwarming to have everyone's comments, I will let you all know what unfolds!

I get the anger part. My first sq 78 was on a smallish ship and faced bad weather in Biscay. The captain just anchored for 2 days in shelter before biscay, waiting for things to calm down. That's how it should be with fragile valuable deck cargo held on by knicker elastic. It's one thing to be hit by storm mid Atlantic but in the med with lots of boltholes it is pretty unforgivable to battle on through a storm in a small ship. I repeat that I'm so sorry to hear of this news and you're right to be angry.

In my experience you have a special insurance policy just for the voyage, to cover your boat plus your share of all sorts of liabilities if the ship hits the rocks. So you need to see what that policy says. Pantenius is a common yacht delivery trip insurer and they are quite decent. I would expect that it is a fixed value policy in case of total loss, so the payout is that value. But it depends on the insurance contract and it could be a payout that is capped at market value. I can't see any argument that the market value of the boat is less than dusty wings just paid for it, but it might also be no higher than that, which is painful because he seems to have got a great price, possibly unrepeatable. Dustywings is v unlikely to have any negligence type claim against the shipping company - there are so many hurdles he would have to overcome to make any progress on that front and it is unlikely to be an English law contract. Fingers crossed on all this

In fairness J, I don't think they had any easy escape, even if relatively close to the coast, because the whole W side of Center/South mainland IT is completely exposed to S/SW storms.
In fact, today (well, yesterday, i.e. monday) the service from Sardinia to Civitavecchia was suspended, in spite of the fact that it's operated with ships whose GT is well above 30k, as opposed to 3k of this Deo Volente thing (yep, 10 times, not a typo!).
I also read that they had to close Naples harbor.
So, once in the middle of the Thyrrenian, I don't think they had any realistic choice other than head for the N coast of Elba, where they are right now, in fact.
Though they could only reach it after losing DV's boat, sadly.
Imho, the big mistake was the decision to continue along their planned route after crossing Messina Strait, I suppose in the hope to be faster than the weather.
But as I said, hindsight and all that...

I don't think that you can blame the captain for this. This storm has hit the whole area. The super yacht my son was working on sunk in the harbour in Rapallo last night. Sometimes things just happen.
