New Boat - all to get underwater lights!

Woohoo! Congratulations Andrew. I might be at Essex next weekend for something so I'll take a look if that's ok. Meantime yes please post as many pics as you can. The boat looks fantastic - as you know Essex stock boats are good becuase they know the right things to spec (especially things like granite colours which are hard to change) and any fiurther tweaks you want are easily changed. My last 58 "classic" was a stock boat in late 2008 as you know and they had specced that really well

I like your mods list. The 7015 screens are awesome and I love them. The xHD radar is fantastic too. (I'm sitting on the boat typing this with mine in sight and even a year on the 7015 still looks huge!)

Those u/w lights will put a small glow into the water and on a very dark moonless light you'll be able to tell they're switch on. Pulling your leg a bit :) and you could try them for season 1 and decide then, or you could get 2 or 4 lumishores put in there now. I spent yesterday here in SofF installing 4 lumishores with EME and it was a nice job.

Anyway keep us up to date and if you decide to make the med move let us know and we'll all look forward to seeing you at an anchorage near here soon :-). Meantime I hope to sneak a quick look at your boat next weekend. Congratulations again

Great boat, well done will look out for you as Lymington my all time fav uk/solent place.

One thing im not sure about engine related is the long run of uncooled exhaust pipe, which I know is difficult for builders to design as to the location of the turbo, I see its covered by manuflex? insulation but that long length of pipe thats not cooled by sea water all adds to engine room ambient temp, just a thought.

Very different to the D13-900 - will be interesting to see how it performs both in terms of heat and noise. The Starboard engine exhaust is quite long as well.

Thanks. Lymington is a great place, both for boating and just to visit. Please stop by for a coffee or beer. We will be in Lymington from early April - in Berthons on the end pontoon closest to the ferry.

Thanks I will take you up on that offer :) I hope my completely refurbished boat will be back in the water April too so if the weather is good I'll see you then.

Great stuff. Looks a super purchase. Hope to be able to say hello to you when you've moved to Berthon which is where we are.

Meanwhile...more pix pls!

looks v good. Did you look at the Princess 60 as an alternative, just out of interest? I looked at both at EXCEL and I think the respective guys at the time said both were stock boats....Princess appeared cheaper on the bit of paper but there wasn't any bargaining as I am not a buyer! I couldn't get on the SS53 (nearly 60' long) but did you check that one out too?

The Princess 60 is gorgeous with some subtle styling tweaks which I suspect will find their way across much of the range. The only slight fly in the ointment (which would be the case for the Squadron 58 as well), is the price tag. It's hard enough making the jump from 42 feet to something a bit larger and full beam in the bedroom department without pushing the boat out further still!

Do it in small stages and it doesn't seem quite as bad!

Henry :)

We looked at the 3 boats at SIBS, as we were thinking of buying a P60.

The Sunseeker does seem smaller, although the stats don't particularly show that, only 6" on the beam. I think maybe the hi-lo platform is longer, so the hull is smaller. The cabinetry didn't seem as good as the other two. The list price is quite a lot lower though.

Fairline had the nicest interior. Princess have understandably played it safe, because that's their market, but I think they've played it too safe in this instance. The Fairline interior looks much more comtemporary without being too cutting edge, and will age just as well, or probably better, in my opinion.

Despite the price of the Sunny, and the nicer interior of the Squaddie, i'd still have opted for the Princess though. I think a hi-lo platform is much more useful than the Fairline tender lift, bcz you can use it for swimming and dining with your toes in the water, and there seems less to go wrong. The p60 also has all cabins en-suite, nicer master cabin, a bigger lazarette, and the killer extra, a double crew cabin that could easily pass as a 4th en-suite cabin. Those things would swing it for us, but of course it's horses for courses, and I think they're all great boats.

Beautiful looking boat, congratulations you must be getting very excited?
Keep the photos coming and enjoy your trip round from Essex.
Will keep an eye out for you in the Solent.

I thought the old Sq58 was a really nice boat but Fairline have done a great job upgrading it. She looks fab. Yup that exhaust support is a big lump of metal but better supported too well than not enough and good to see Fairline using flexible mountings. Look forward to more pics

Great boat

I see that the exhaust temperature sensor is still coiled up under the air filter. It's worth asking the question now to see if you can get it fitted into the manuflex exhaust system. There is normally a piece of stainless steel that gets welded into the exhaust. Then the exhaust temperature can be displayed on your Volvo display.

That finish in the interior looks stunning, I am a huge fan of Princess (one day!) and am fond of light Oak but I am really not keen on any of the Princess oak interiors I have seen anywhere.

I know it's all down to personal taste, that is just my own taste.

Please please please could you post a few more pics of the interior when all is put back together and ship shape, just for me to drool over basically but I would appreciate a better look.

The oak treatment is quite different in Prin vs Fairline. Prin use a system they're familiar with from doing gloss boats, which totally fills the grain and leaves a smooth surface with a disappointing finish on light woods. Whatever product they use has a slight pink tint to it unfortunately. Sunseeker do fewer oak boats and use a too-glossy finish plus visible silicone joints and it looks awful, compared with their excellent walnut interiors. Fairline use a lacquer system by Italian company Sayerlack and they blend gloss+matt to get the right sheen and apply it, crucially, leaving the wood grain open which looks loads better. Hard to capture in pictures but here are some fairline oak shots

Thank you for the info JFM, the difference in the finish between the two is quite striking.

The appearance of the Fairline looks so good wheras I can't see why anyone would specify Oak in a Princess boat having seen the overall look on finished boats. Once again, no offence meant to anyone, I appreciate that this is all down to personal taste and I have no wish to offend anyone whose taste differs from mine.

Actually Mike I believe Princess are aware having had the feedback from many customers/would-be customers, including me when considerering a Prin 78 about 18 months ago. They told me they agree the complaints, and are looking into changing the lacquer, but I haven't seen a result yet. No doubt if someone order an M yacht from them and insisted, they would sort it out. The other thing they do a bit offputtingly is make their 90deg external joints with a strip of L section maple just glued on, eg see the end of the bed base box in pic below from the Prin78. The maple (on the 90deg corner, and around the bed edge) has a different colour from the strangely pink oak and the planted on corner strip in this location doesn't look great on £3m of boat. They are working on it though, and of course they are capable of making great interiors in the darker woods so it ought not to be difficult for them to fix this

The oak on the Princess I saw at london was as the bloke described it "new open grain satin oak". Apparently it has been used for a while and he also said all the "satin" wood was open grain now....funny how things stick in the memory....funny also how individual taste varies. That Fairline wood colour looks a bit bland to me....probably just the light.
