My first boat - buying tomorrow fingers crossed (advice pls)

I never understand why people get hung up on road tax. By the time you've bought, insured and fuelled the car (to tow your boat, no less!), an extra few hundred in tax is negligible.

Depends how many Vehicles you tax I currently tax 5 and it adds up a bit

I think you have attachment issues. My missus says I'm a hoarder :D (y)(y)

I find the maintenance aspect the hardest. Buildings, boats, caravans, cars. Can't keep up with it all. Cost dictates doing it myself and although I do keep the service history on the cars, that might change at some point.

P.S. Not always mine, try to look after family

or the MIL caravan about. Didn’t even know it was on the back…..wish it wasn’t on the back…..I could feel the anger towards me from other road users. Can’t blame em ??

Hey I like that...never seen one before. Is it called a dmax? Don't think its 7 seats though?

100% true... its not a considering factor in my decision making on what I'm going to buy

4x4
Auto
7 seats
Towing capacity

Preferably low milage and new as possible ... that's it

Oh needs to look nice too... keep my wife happy

On the Audi Q7 some I looked at had a Road Tax of £630 that is also rather a lot. My Disco 2 is I think £340 mind you the Disco 3 was £600 Ouch

We went to see this audi... seems low milage ... didn't feel like the quality was as good as the jeep though. What's your thoughts on the q7?

To me the Q7 looks too much like a car and too new for me. For towing boats and launching boats at slipways etc I prefer something that operates and looks like a 4 x 4. I also want low tech with as few sensors and other stuff like that. That is why I like the Discovery 2 TD5. Yes there are some issues but if you are handy with tools you can sort most of them.

for me also my boat car is full of loads of boating stuff so don’t want it to also be my main car.

Salt water and slipways eventually kill cars and hence I try and buy cheap if possible

ford ranger on lease jacked up so its not going to get doors/carpets wet inside, pickup for all those tools etc you'll need to carry, 4x4 with lockable diff etc and if its on lease it'll be brand new so you don't have to worry for mot for 3 years or old stuff breaking.

Never bought anything on lease before is it worth it? From the name is it just renting a car and assuming there are restrictions and wont I be liable for any damages and repairs when I give it back? Seems like a headache? However, I was thinking about reinvesting the £15k or so I allocated for buying an old 4x4 and having a monthly payment for a car vs paying for it cash.... depends on the lease interest rate vs the ROI on investing.

ps: what's a lockable diff?

the ignominy of it, car was 3 hours old, just out the dealers and I got it stuck in a peat bog, had to get a tow from a Daihatsu...

Diff lock is a device to lock up the wheels and/or drive shaft together so they turn at the same speed, so that drive goes to all wheels to give better traction, foolishly I had not activated the diff lock in the above picture and so got the car stuck... road tyres did not help either.
Just before getting stuck, Dunnet Head, overlooking the Pentland Firth, Castle of Mey in the distance.

What she wears now when going off road and it takes a bit of effort to get her stuck.

It took me hours to clean the mud out of the car after that treffen with the Land Rover Club Holland

Isn't manual diff lock a relic of the past?

X-drive and now the newer Quattro systems electronically engage/disengage drive to individual wheels for the best grip? Or have I got it wrong? Happens in a split second. E-diff.

Looks like you had a bit of fun here. Thanks for the explanation ... so just having a 4x4 isn't enough then?

Ps. Nice view

Yes was looking at this older 2007 jeep which probably isn't smart enough?... or a q7 around 2011 which I believe has quattro in the title.
