My first boat - buying tomorrow fingers crossed (advice pls)

Hi ST840,

That is a good idea, so I should arrange for a survey whilst I am there looking at it and then if s/he says it is ok then I can part with the cash? Is it better to pay via bank than cash for boats? Dont fancy taking out a big bag of cash albeit the seller requested this on the advert.

Sorry to hear about the extra 10k but hope the boat is going well now?

What is a solent? and thanks cant wait get on the water... ;)

Tony
You need a professional opinion before you part with even a penny. But you can see if the hull has taken abuse - run your hand carefully along points of possible contact. Inside check the bulkheads - are they complete all along, showing no signs of parting from the hull. Do doors close properly- if not hull is distorting. Have electrical systems been properly laid in and not a box of snakes?
You can't judge the motor unless run up afloat. No surveyor will advise you on a static power plant. That's the rub. If it starts readily it's likely compression and fuel delivery are OK. If diesel, the high pressure pump is the really expensive bit.
Regard all electronics barring GPS and VHF radio as about to fail - would you replace? Buy a new life raft - it's your family were talking about here.

So, put aside £1k for unexpected repairs over your first 12 months so you are not upset when something crocks. Could be bearings in a trailer.....

Only pay when totally satisfied, of course. Totally.

And don't be discouraged by this account. If basic tests show no probs you have many hours of fun ahead. Good luck and welcome to the briney.

I think you might be somewhat out of date in a few areas

1 Tony bought the boat months ago

2 are you aware this is a small sports boat not a large cruiser

3 do you know how boats are selling and being bought at the moment…… cos you ain’t got no time for even half of what you suggest

Not particularly, but I don't see the need for people to be rude either - he hasn't been here for a few weeks, so what? Life gets in the way sometimes.

Not rude. He was so keen early on and received loads of help and advice. I was hoping he had used it and was enjoying it and hoping for an update......... Sometimes levity can be seen by some as rudeness. does this help ;)

Likewise, I'd love to hear how he's got on, but know that my own boating plans are delayed through circumstances beyond my control. Like I said, life gets in the way, for many of us boating is time-consuming luxury at the end of a long list of things that we have to do first.

My point exactly, not particulary aimed at your post btw. What might be funny round a pub table WITH the OP looks very different in "print" ABOUT the OP in his abscence.

I know this comes across a bit snowflakish, but the simple fact that the OP has asked so very many questions makes it clear that he is not experienced in the joys (and miseries) of messing about in boats, nor particularly confident in his own decision making on the subject - quite rightly, considering the lack of experience. If his first outing has not been the glorious triumph he was dreaming of (and as we all know too well, there's every chance of that) then his confidence will have taken a knock and it would be nice to come back here for help and encouragement, not a ribbing.

Many including me tried to calm him down a little so his first outing would be a success....... Whether he listened I know not.

As for time remember this...... We all have exactly the same amount of time it is just a question of how we choose to use it.

That’s not correct. Some of us will live to a ripe old age and some of us won’t. Some will be stopped in their tracks by illness or incapacity.
